I don't know Tim, after the hospital bed scandal I'm a bit skeptical... I'm thinking stage makeup? Could it be from a jousting injury back in '08? Are these Rosie O'Donnell's knees?

Here's the story... I rode up the steep section of the road as usual and decided to go one block further than the last ride.  When it came time to turn back though, "Jelly Legs" had set in.  I wasn't moving fast enough for the turn and just... tumped over.  I honestly think the scraped knees were from trying to crawl back up to a standing position when I literally couldn't feel anything.

But take heart.  Since the parts for the wheelie bar have arrived, I'm taking the bike back to the shop today to get to work on that!

And before some wag suggests it, I do have an extra set of skateboard wheels, maybe I'll make some training wheels as well. /s

Paradime, I forgot that I "Cried Wolf" with the hospital picture actually.  Sorry about that.  Your joke landed perfectly, and was quite the amuse.

But back to the bike!

I forgot to take pictures of the bits before starting, but the wheelie bars came out pretty well... in my never very humble opinion.

Made a "D" shaped plate to zook onto the short sissy bar I bought...

Then zooked it onto the short sissy bar that I bought and drilled it for skateboard trucks...

Then we flattened the ends of some conduit to make the braces...

And bolted it all up...

All we had was "High Temp" so the flat black is temporary until we buy some more Satan Black.  I'll also add some pix of the skateboard truck and wheels Wednesday.

I decided to go with another post (because I'm a post whore) rather than edit the last one with this clarification.

After looking at the pictures, it occurs to me that you can't really tell how high off the road the wheelie bar wheels are.  Basically, we set them up so that on the kickstand, leaning back on the rear tire (unlike the pictures where it is leaning on the front), the bar's wheels are just kissing the ground.  This gives a maximum of about 6" of wheelie on the front tire.  Remember though, this is a "safety" bar, not a "cheater*" bar.  I want it to keep me from flipping over backwards and/or scaring the crap out of me by wheelie-ing too high.  We can get a little more wheelie by moving these struts up to the seat mount holes on the sissy bar (and we might do that), or get a lot more by making some shorter struts.  Stay tuned.

*As in making wheelies easier, thus "cheating"

So, how can one tell if he's too old and fat to ride a bicycle?

His knees suddenly look like this:

Oh, the bike is fine!  I repeat, the bike... is... fine!

Seems like your pride might be hurt? Just be happy you're not one of my brothers. Any time one of us would crash when out MTBing it was a point and laugh fest.

It was totally laugh worthy.  There's no denying that!

As promised (albeit a few days late doo-doo the weather), here are pictures of the trucks and wheels I used to build the wheelie bar.

Some shorter ape hangers are on the way to see if we can dial out some twitchiness.  I'll have those pictures on Wednesday... or next Saturday.

So the shorter ape hangers turned out to be quite a bit narrower as well.  I'm not 100% convinced they are going to dial out the twitchiness.

I also got a new stem which I mounted as high as possible.

It was too cold and wet to try them out last night, but I might give them a go on Saturday.

We also did some modifications to the Smart Car's bike rack, but I forgot to take pictures.

Something that has bugged me forever on this bike is how the front spring is twisted and cocked at a weird angle...

IMG_20230208_165942841.thumb.jpg.9f8a3574d5abdb15fabdd1a528bc17b4.jpg

Today I tweaked the bracket on the stem to correct that...

IMG_20230211_125547293.thumb.jpg.c20854b7bf39442bcba89d98ca6128c1.jpg

I also added a jam nut so I could soften the preload a little and get a bit more supple ride...

And speaking of rides, I finally tried to upload some of my Faux-Pro (Chinese knockoff GoPro) footage to the YouTubes.

Yes, it is a total crap-fest of a video, but it is MY total crap-fest of a video!

More crap video of me riding the bike.  Not sure if seeing my face makes it better or worse, but at least the terrible audio is gone.  Once I finger out some editing software, I'll put these to music... or something.

I brought the bike home again today.

Then stood on the front porch for five minutes staring down at it...

... before deciding that I did NOT want to go for  a  ride after all.  I unloaded it and  put it in the garage.

Today I went for a ride... a very short ride!  It was enough to get my fat-ass heart rate up and give me jelly legs.  No audio (still haven't figured out editing software on a Chromebook) and terrible video ($30 Chinesium Faux-Pro) but... well, here

am now convinced that the shorter ape hangers dialed out some twitchiness.  I still need to finger out some sort of editing software on a Chromebook though because my videos are embarrassingly crappy!
