dimlight65
The wheels arrived the other day. I have them sequestered in the corner to think about what they have done (cost twice what the original bike cost me!) while we finish the Dajiban. I'm not in love with the shifter I bought, so I'm looking at something else. Of course, that also costs over twice what I paid for the original bike! Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
Once it got too dark to work on the Dajiban outside, I installed a set of bar-end mirrors. Ooooooooo! 1 Quote Link to comment

Factoring in the frame adapter that would be required as well, this shifter is over 3.5 times what I paid for the original bike. So, since I'm not a dumbass, I'm not going to order it... Is what I should say. But we all know I just ordered it. 1 Quote Link to comment
paradime
Are you getting the billet aluminum shifter? You naughty boy! 1 Quote Link to comment

I like the idea of it being made for the hub and therefore should just hook right up. That's worth the price of admission to me. Besides, now I can make a custom shift lever for it. 1 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
You know how you should never "do the math" on how much you spend on these projects? I really should have listened to that warning. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
I made an intake for my side drafts, materials cost under $20. But finding out ways that did not work would be close to 20 times that. I stopped remembering to add expenses after $300. 1 Quote Link to comment

dimlight65
The shifter arrived today! I can't wait to get it to the shop so I can mount it up and build a stick for it! 2 Quote Link to comment

dimlight65
So, being who I am, I wanted to know the gear ratios of this Shimano 3-speed hub. They are 0.73:1, 1:1, and 1.36:1 by the way. Then, also because of who I am, I wanted to know how it works. After reading a few articles, and grokking a few diagrams, I get it. At the factory, a witch doctor apparently sacrifices a chicken... 1 1 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
I did a temporary install of the new shifter today. We're going to look at a couple different knob options, but for now it's a Hurst pistol grip. Which looks absolutely badass, until you realize it can't be used as intended by gripping it properly. We'll see. 1 Quote Link to comment

paradime
I'm not a fan of the white plastic. Mill an extension with an 8 Ball? 1 Quote Link to comment

If you are talking about the shifter, that is billet aluminum. We have an 8-ball (of sorts) we were looking at also. It will definitely need an extension. 2 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
I have some bits and bobs on order from McMaster Carr to make a shift lever (extension) for the ball that John mentioned. I have also ordered a 7" purple dild... I mean, shift knob that I would like to try out either with or without an extension. Stay tuned. 1 Quote Link to comment

Duncan
The Hurst handle looks like it might lend itself to speed shifting, though. 😁 1 1 Quote Link to comment

I will leave it to the owner of said project to 'splain if he sees fit. 1 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
I decided to play around with some different knobs we had laying around at the shop. First, John has a Guy Fawkes ball for some reason... While I have a B&M T-handle... And then there's the tribute to the Statutory Grape. A cameo of a 1962 Ford Econoline van in a ball... The two balls (go ahead, I know you want to snicker at that) will work close-coupled like that, but I have the makings of a stick shift on the way. The T-handle would need a more robust handle than what is on order, but I have a solution in mind. The purple dildo should be here tomorrow so I'll have a look at it Saturday. 1 Quote Link to comment
paradime
When I was a kid none of my bikes had 2 balls and a dildo. Obviously your childhood was way more interesting. 2 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
So I wasn't happy with the dildo. It got installed on the Dajiban instead. I was happy with the stick shift I made for the Statutory Grape knob. Straight up stick... Then added an S-curve for better aesthetics, and shrunk on four layers of heat shrink... Now I just need to get the three-speed hub mounted! 2 Quote Link to comment
