Suggestion............leave that drip rail stainless trim ON THE CAR, work around it carefully & mask it off!  They are a massive pain to remove & often get bent AND if you remove them & then lay on too much paint on the actual drip rails, they won't fit back on properly & can get beat up/dented while TRYING to get them back on!  Just my 2c!

As a body guy and someone whos taken quite a few off\on 510s and Zs, its not a bad idea at all lol

They have a bit of trick to them, but even if you got it down they are funky.

L series F4W63 becoming an F4W63L before '74? just after the '73 PL510. Outwardly the same (26" long) visually as the earlier F4W63, but with internal changes and improvements. This style was used on the 521/520, early 620, PL510, 710 and HL510. (Used on the 610 but in 31.5" length) Has neutral switch and reverse consistent with early PL510 Later HL510 has a 4th gear switch as does the 710 and 620. The 521 has no neutral switch so by elimination probably from an early PL510. (probably) Has an interesting breather. Haven't seen that style before. Needs to be closed on top to keep crap out of transmission.

This leaves... is it from a sedan or wagon??? Place in first gear and mark the input and output splines. Turn input 20 times while counting output turns.

5.91 (almost 6 turns)..... PL510 sedan (all other cars would have this gearing including wagons)

5.46 (almost 5.5 turns)..... PL510 wagon (520/521 and early 620 would also have this gearing)

Had a guy come out to grab the same drip rails off of a Wagon parts car I have (yes going back on a Wagon!), he pulled them off, said they came off easy!  I know the Wagon drip rail is much flatter, where as the Sedan has a consistent bow front to back, so that must be why the Sedan is harder.........??

Its hard to explain, but there is a trick to it.

The hardest part is getting them started... but they kind of roll off the drip rail.

I can pull the Z car ones off with just my hands.

Went through the wiring today... There's two parts of a harness that look like they are from a 620 or 720 or something.. And I believe the 510 harness  is fairly compete with fusebox ignition Etc... I can't find the part of the harness that plugs into the cluster though so I don't know if I'm missing some of it or what...

Also there is no 510 heater core and fan assembly, the heater setup that was in the car I realize is out of a 620 or something as well.... So I think I'm going to run one of those cheap hot rod aftermarket heater cores...

I've decided to do a Honda k24 swap in the car, I have a friend locally that has one in his 510 wagon and I will be paying him to atleast do the wiring part of the swap and possibly the custom mounts...

Going to run an rx8 tranny with an adapter plate... Since I'm going to be wiring in a efi harness etc hopefully there's enough of the original harness here...

I'm missing all of the front dash parts so I'm trying to decide if I should locate all the parts and put it together or just run a sheet metal dash, Since I'm going to run a swap I'll need aftermarket gauges anyways...

Can someone tell me what all this stuff is? I know the heater box, the  shifter plate and gasket, and all the rubber plugs but not sure what the other stuff is lol..

Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

Another Datsun lost to the engine swap. At least keep it Datsun/ Nissan! Or even rotary power. Hell, I'd go LS3 before I'd do a Honda swap. That just seems wrong.

I know I know.. but sr20s are too expensive and getting old… ca18 non turbo is about same cost as kseries  also getting old and less power than the Honda motor… turbo anything is too much work and not really what I want for this car.. ka24e or de are getting harder to find and by the time I rebuild since they are all used will be same cost as Honda motor and less power… I want efi NA and around 200hp and unfortunately Honda is probably the cheapest way to obtain that… $1000 low mileage jdm motors are plentiful.. $200 rx8 6 speeds are everywhere… this kinda future proofs part availability for this car if anything ever breaks.. I used to want a Nissan only power plant in every Datsun now I just want the most driver friendly and easily accessible swap and I truly believe this is the best setup for me.. any other motor swap this would be another one of those threads where I say “I’m putting an SR in it” then I never get to it, and the car sits another 10 years .. I have connections to make the k swap actually happen so that’s the plan unfortunately..

Ok, fine.

My day job is swapping engines, and I am always on the lookout for new and interesting, or better yet, old and interesting engines for potential swaps. I have a mental list of what vehicles should get what engines. For Datsuns, I've always wanted to find one of the Prince V8s as used by Nissan in their IMSA cars from the '90s. They are out there.

We talked about the late Nissan V8 (Armada & trucks) in a 280Z, but we ended up with an 80k mile LS1 out of a Vette.  Now I just gotta find the right 280Z!

L20B is 280 pounds so 50% more engine (two more cylinders) is 420? Give or take. Skib might know.

With all stock manifolds, accessories, ect

An L24 is ~425lbs and on the other end an L28et is ~475lbs, an L28e is prob about ~450lbs

Thread drift...

First swap was a 350 into a 78 280ZX with a kit from Jags That Run.  Pre internet days, no idea of how I found them.

Second was a 1960's 425 Rocket Olds into a slammed 1979 Jeep CJ-7.  That was a rocket.

Latest was a K24Z3 into a Miata.  Love the K24 swaps.  If you blow it up, just go grab another one.  It is the modern Chevy 350 to an older hot rodder like me.

I agree with this statement 100 percent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the main things I kicked myself about on my green build.  It was the first time I removed and the last time....  NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!  510s look so much better with the gutter trim.  I mean just look how stupid my car looks without it...

JTR used to advertise in magazines. I remember seeing the ads. I still buy stuff from them these days.

I've only ever seen on slammed CJ, and that was an all chrome flattie with wire wheels in, you guessed it, Tijuana.

John is still around??  If you talk to him, tell him TJ from Engel Imports says hello! (that was in the 1990's)  His rep was Vicki, but when she was busy or out, he & I talked!

I remember him advertising in Hemmings!

The business is now run by Greg. His brother, who I believe was John, passed away a couple years ago. From there, it was hit and miss, but they've got things figured out now.
