Replacing driveshaft seal ‘82 720 SD22 5speed 2WD

Hello forum-land first time caller long time listener here.

i am replacing my center bearing on my driveshaft today along with all of the u-joints due to the rubber around the center bearing being long deteriorated, along with a gear oil flinging mess from a long failed output shaft seal.

MY Question is…. what is the best way to replace the output drive shaft seal(sleeve yoke front side) so as to not have it leak again for the live of the part once i have the new center bearing installed properly?

i purchased a skf speedy sleeve and seal.

I have the original service manual and its falling short on this small detail/or highly likely i have yet to find it.

5-speed transmission (Model: FS5W71B) Driveshaft/propeller shaft (Model: 3S63H)

Any helpful useful input is appreciated

if i have missed this elsewhere on the site i apologize, if so though i would greatly appreciate a link!

thanks for reading

The center drive shaft bearing almost never fails, it's the rubber surround that rots away and destabilizes it. Replace the rubber surround but I would hang onto the bearing and leave well enough alone. Up to you, but I don't fix what isn't broken.

While the drive shaft is out, just pry the old output seal from the transmission with a screwdriver. Put the new seal in place, cover with a block of wood and hammer into place. Grease the seal lips first so it does not start turning dry. A new one should fix the leak there's nothing more to do.

Seat the seal all the way in with a wooden dowel.

Thank you a-whole-lot for this reply! im typing on my phone currently with greasy fingers while fiddling with these u-joints. i wonder if i can remove just the rubber only on this new replacement center bearing? yes the old bearing seems fine. that would save me the bike ride to find a bearing press if i could simple swap. i wish i could send pictures but i haven’t figured out an acceptable file size for this server. very much appreciated!
