the engine would still be burning oil by the water pump

I guess, I don’t really understand this statement, but if you meant that it’s leaking oil from the timing cover, which the water pump is attached to, I understand that. You’re going to have to pull the timing cover off anyway because the timing chain tensioner has popped out, judging by a previous picture of the engine. Myself, I would pull the engine and through it. It takes all of the guesswork out. The z24 is a simple engine to work on.

Leaking is much different than burning oil. If the timing cover is coming off to fix the tensioner then if it's leaking is a moot point. They don't usually leak there. More likely it's running down from the valve cover gasket above it.

Take the valve cover off, clean the head and valve cover, get new gasket with half moon pieces and black silicone.Put silicone on half moon pieces and in valve cover bolt holes,if your screws are phillip heads, get rid of them and go to lowe's and get hex heads so you can easily torg it to 2.2lbs at a criscross pattern. Then it won't leak, just done mine and painted the valve cover. Also move the throttle cable to get valve cover on and off easier. You can see 720 guys on you tube showing how to replace gasket and see how there's is leaking at the front half moon piece and not using silicone or torqing it.And use  the silicone in the bolt holes,if not,it will leak and the half moon pieces.Let the silicone dry for a day.
