Mr.Disprosium
It was running fine but I took a bunch of parts off it cause it got smashed up but I'm deciding to fix it. I pulled the radiator and the thermostat. This is the important part. I finally decided to put windows back in it and put her back together have a brand new thermostat and a radiator than I know is good. The heater core is bypassed because it is plugged. It's overheating now when it didn't before I took parts off of it. I took out the thermostat and it stayed cool but when I put it back in it overheats. I know for a fact that the thermostat is good too. I'm stumped and discouraged I need some help Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
1/ You can't know the thermostat is good unless you use a thermometer and a pot of hot water and watch it open. New.. means absolutely nothing, it's untried and untested in your truck. If it over heats with it, but not without it, this kind of says it's the cause. Normal running temperature is about half way on the gauge and this is about 180-185F thermostat. Borrow an infrared heat gun and 'shoot' the thermostat housing when running and compare to the gauge. 2/ Are the heater hoses joined together? This would be a bad idea to send hot coolant out of the block and right back into the water pump without being cooled by the heater core. When the heater is not used the flow is shut off. Block the flow and this might help. 3/ there is third possibility but it's more bother and I'll wait to see if the above fixes it. Quote Link to comment
bottomwatcher
Was the thermostat less than $15? I have had many bad thermostats out of the box. Buy a good quality thermostat and check box for country of origin. Japan, US, Isreal are usually good. Quote Link to comment
Thomas Perkins
When you put the thermostat in.Did you start the engine without the radiator cap on and let the engine warm up until the thermostat opens up and the engine starts to circulate coolant from the radiator, then add some till it is full. .Make sure your overflow is at the full mark. Not doing this can make it run hot. Then put cap on,take it for a ride, then come back home, turn off and check your over flow container, add if needed. You will see the air come out of the radiator when the thermostat opens. Not doing this will cause trapped air in the system and run hot..As it is warming up,keep your eye on the temperature gauge. After it opens, the temp. will go down.Mine stays at the same place when it warms up,below half way. It's called burping, getting the air out...Of all the thermostats I have installed, they were all good,I tested them first too. Also keep your eye on the overflow container for a few days. Also look at the water pump and hoses for leaks.I did connect my heater hoses together when my heater core went bad and it never ran hot.Your overflow container should stay at the same spot,if not,you have a leak.
