Goemon
Cool, Thanks. I pulled the one out of the 79, and I am wondering if all 79 620 has this line in the casting. The line is what sparked my interest to want know what ratios were in the different differentials. I like the fact it has a 4.11..The only "mod" I have ever done was a smog delete & Weber I have had this truck since 1987. I think I am second owner, so it has not been molested. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The '73 L16 automatic came with 4.625 differential, otherwise just 4.375 and 4.11 in the 620. 4.625.... 37/8 1 Quote Link to comment
Goemon
Due to a shipping error I wound up with 2 gaskets. Since it seems like I have had to do some stuff twice, I figured I was going to need the other gasket. I did. I cleaned, removed, cleaned, sandblasted & primed and FINALLY installed the 1979 4.11. I used a belt sander to smooth the line and stamped it for whoever gets it when I die. She has been with me 35 yrs so far. Is there a link on any tips I may need to know on installing the axles? Tips that the book won't tell you ??? I got new KOYO bearings, new Japanese seals & I have some extra shims from the frame rear end. Thanks Quote Link to comment
Goemon
Oh yeah, I put the new front bushings in the front spring ends. Big bolts, nuts & washers. Tightened them right on in. I have the new bearings packed for the axles since this was taken. I also got new retaining rings. Now I could use some pointers to maybe help me not to have to do it twice.. Thanks Quote Link to comment
Goemon
Back in with new spring bushings Front is torn down and being cleaned. Front bumps had to be ordered from UAE for the small & Japan for the large. All 555 steering and Japanese upper & lower control arm bushings. Quote Link to comment
Goemon
I have a chance to buy a 5 speed from a 1982 280 zx Will that be worth a shit with the 4.11...???? Thanks Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It'll fit and work but 5th OD is 25.5%. Put it this way if the tire is 26" (I think this is close) a 4.11 in 4th is 3,186 RPMs at 60 MPH. If shifting a zx OD this drops to 2,374. Do you think the engine will be able to make enough torque to sustain anything but level highway driving with no wind????? In comparison the 5 speed mated to the '79 620 with the 4.11 has a 5th gear RPM of 2,810 @ 60. BTW if I had a dollah for every claimed zx transmission I could retire.... again. Can't tell much from the outside. Put in first gear, mark input and output shafts, turn input 20 times and count output turns... 5.5 turns is a wide ratio (like in the '79 620 with 4.11) 6.0 turns is the mid ratio (the first year 280zx had this gear set) 6.5 turns is the close ratio 0.745 5th gear 280zx 5 speed Quote Link to comment
Goemon
Thanks, So avoid ? I believe you said a 79 200 sx would be the best 5 speed but them ain't easy to find in the east. I haven't seen a Datsun in a junkyard in over 20 Years here in Jawja I have raped the shit out of every 720 I can find Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Absolutely NOT a '77-'79 200sx dogleg 5 speed. Too short and too light duty for a truck. Quote Link to comment
