L20b best mechanical fuel pump???

710wagon

Recommended Posts

I am looking for the best mechanical fuel pump for my 710 with an L20b motor. I have gone through 3 of them from auto part stores locally in less than a month.  Looking at converting to an electronic fuel pump down the road so any suggestions in one or complications in installing one are also appreciated. Thanks.

Get one from Nissan parts or a want ad in classifieds for a used original one.

It's common to forget or lose the 1/4' thick black plastic spacer between pump and the head. Pump, gasket, spacer, gasket, head. Has to be there.

I did not know there was supposed to be a spacer there. I’ve never had one since I’ve owned the car for 4 years. Is that a part that Nissan carries or is it something that lame hard to come by.

I have always been running just the gasket between the header and fuel pump. that makes sense that the pumps come with 2 gaskets. if you have a photo Id appreciate it.

My 710 came to me with an after market pump on it. I detest them for their looks. In the back of the wagon were some used parts, spark plugs etc. and the stock mechanical pump. I put it back on..... that was 10 years ago. Shake my head. Owners have a fuel delivery problem (maybe) so instead of solving using the clues provided if you just look, their first reaction is to put on a new pump..... which obviously wasn't the problem. Same with ignition, just buy a new $50 or more likely they are too cheap so they replace a superior Nissan part with a piece of shit $20 coil and it doesn't help. Starter or alternators are worse because they turn in the casting and there's no going back to the original. Replacing perfectly good original parts with crap gets expensive. Go to casino if taking a chance! Christ on crutches never throw away old parts.

I am on my second airtex (first broke and left me stranded) but bought a nikki to replace that second airtex when I get around to it.

Speaking of which which is the inlet on the Nikki? The one with the arrow above it?

inlet on the Nikki?

put your mouth or thumb on it and pump it will be obvious which one sucks in.

the pump will bolt to the head but there is  plastic/Fonolic spacer.. some come with the pumps also(aftermarket)  I havent seen the dealer ones come with spacers.   Nikki Koyosan are the best pumps if they even still out there

I have run the Mexican made Stone Brand or whatever with the Gold cap tops but swap them out the the orininal nes when I get them. keep the mexican ones in truck under seat as a spare

The mechanical pumps last the life of the engine. As long as they are an original Nissan Hitachi and not some $20 over the counter POS from Taiwan. Same with electric pumps, the 720 truck used them and they last a long long time, but they have to be original equipment part.
