gunsmith
I need conformation that this engine swap is doable. I just purchased a 1986 D21 4x4 extended cab with a bad motor. The motor most likely is warped head; cylinders 1,2 massive leak between them and very low compression on cylinders 3 & 4. I have a good motor out of a 1984 720 4x4 extended cab. Both trucks a manual transmissions the blocks look the same, mounts etc.... I want to make sure there's no hidden gotchas. The 720 is a Z24 motor carburreted. The D21 is a Z24i motor. datzenmike
Engine block and head from the '84 should do it. Both manifolds, the distributor (CAS) and the drive spindle below it and and probably the oil pan and pick up tube from the Hardbody go on it. Flywheels and pressure plates should be the same 240mm but just so you don't get your ass bitten, use the D21 parts. It's possible that something like the clutch fan may be different but this is something on the outside and easily changed later after the swap. Quote Link to comment
IHaveNoIdeaWhatIAmDoing
just out of curiosity where did you pick up this truck? I was just looking at one with the same issues but was unable to purchase it. Quote Link to comment
