Had insanely amazing eyesight so everyone wanted to be near him in the war because no one could sneak up on them. Shot down in France had to walk over the Pyrenees mountains into neutral Spain. If a pilot is shot down and makes it back they are never allowed to fly there again. Something about getting shot down a second time and being captured and giving up information about the resistance. He fought it all the way up to Eisenhower who relented. Test flew most new experimental planes through the 50s and made the transition to jets.. Was always worried about having a road at Vandenberg named after him... if you know what I mean. Larger than life. He would have been worth knowing.
