a.labanon
Bought the car with a r180 and Porsche cv axles. Noticed fluid on the ground and found that the differential side plate bolts where backing out a little. Tightened the bolts but its still leaking. Need help. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Are you running synthetic oil? That stuff will creep through old seals. Just changing back to the GL-5 90w may stop it Quote Link to comment

a.labanon
What brand do you suggest? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I did this on a transfer case on a 720 and replaced the driveshaft seal @ $25... then the front one and then the top input. News seals will fix it usually but proper oil would be cheaper. I tried synthetic engine oil once. Within a couple of weeks there was a drip on the end of the crankshaft pulley. Next oil change I ran regular 10w30 motor oil and it slowly dried up. Oils have to meet a meet a minimum standard so any GL-5 rated oil will do. For more money you will get extra protection perhaps more anti foam and rust inhibitors. For that a brand name. Quote Link to comment

yenpit
Those side plates are EASY to pull off & reseal! Careful to keep the shims on each correct side. Buy the main lip seal (stub axle), the BIG side plate oring & the SMALL stub axle bolt oring, all available from Nissan. I buy all of my OEM parts from Riley at Lynchburg Nissan............try his online store, but might be shut down temporarily OR email parts@lynchburgnissan.com. He is now overall manager at this large Nissan dealership, so sometimes takes some prodding to get our classic Datsun parts out of him...........unfortunately the late model Nissan parts are the dealerships gravy, NOT our old Datsun parts! You could potentially replace these seals with axles out but diff still bolted in place................. Quote Link to comment
