russaroll
Just finished driving my 510 after i refreshed the motor and the valve cover gasket shot out one side. my engine bay is now covered in fresh oil. it shot out the manifold side, so i was smoking like a train on my way back from the store. I bought a full gasket kit, it was an APEX kit. it had a silicone valve cover gasket, i thought it was interesting. BAD idea. i'm sticking with a trusty cork gasket. DON'T make the same mistake i did. DON'T use a silicone gasket. This has been a public service announcement from my garage. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Silicone 'rubber' is highly resistant to oil and heat. This can't be what they said it was. Rubber... real rubber, if they still make it, is the opposite and petroleum products will cause it to swell and dissolve. Quote Link to comment
Draker
Funny, I just installed a reusable 100% silicone gasket in my 510 today. These are the ones Greg childs made. Gotta make sure those valve covert bolts are tight!! I’ll double check mine. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Some silicone gasket makers specify that the gasket be bonded to the valve cover before use. The valve cover gasket I use in my Sprite is silicone and is bonded to the cover with a thin layer of RTV. Quote Link to comment

Stoffregen Motorsports
Some common V8 gaskets use a thin steel core, which makes them more rigid. Quote Link to comment
