silicone gasket WARNING

Just finished driving my 510 after i refreshed the motor and the valve cover gasket shot out one side.  my engine bay is now covered in fresh oil.  it shot out the manifold side, so i was smoking like a train on my way back from the store.   I bought a full gasket kit, it was an APEX kit.  it had a silicone valve cover gasket, i thought it was interesting.  BAD idea.  i'm sticking with a trusty cork gasket.

DON'T make the same mistake i did.

DON'T use a silicone gasket.

This has been a public service announcement from my garage.

Funny, I just installed a reusable 100% silicone gasket in my 510 today. These are the ones Greg childs made. Gotta make sure those valve covert bolts are tight!!

I’ll double check mine.

👍

Some silicone gasket makers specify that the gasket be bonded to the valve cover before use. The valve cover gasket I use in my Sprite is silicone and is bonded to the cover with a thin layer of RTV.

mine came in a kit.  i didn't read the instructions, they're just gaskets.  it prolly wouldn't have hurt.
