The "Hermit Crab"!

Recommended Posts

Well as the title teases, hermit crabs change shells as they grow and needs change. We escaped Florida to Maine in an ancient Duramax Silverado with a standard shell. Bucket for toilet, never entered a building between homes. Just 5 slimey diesel nozzles was all we touched that wasn't our own. Now we love to travel but in a covid world we don't want to enter any public areas. The plan was Newfoundland but wisely the Canadians aren't letting Americans in so we are traveling Maine. Found a bigger shell for sale roadside and Wifey once she saw the rack system said we need to buy. Wifey built the kayaks without outside help which I am proud of her but they need a secure easy way to load and these racks are awsome! My job was to make the inside livable so here we are.VDTP10P.jpg97jRRUl.jpgJkOPdnt.jpgu9FKJFV.jpg

At 6ft not quite. The bed folds from couch to full sized bed. Bigger than the bed at the house. Unfortunately there are a lot of compromises but we just spent a week out in it and did fine. The remnants of that hurricane passed in the middle of the night bringing very high winds. Glad to not be in a tent.npvjukw.jpg

Well it's been a while and there are a few updates.  We added some bling to the back of the rig which is never as simple as it looks. The truck got saggy ass disease meaning airbags needed to be added. Since they seem to slowly leak an in cab compressor and guage had to be added.  Next up the bikes got relocated to the front after a front hitch was added. This is getting kind of silly as a rolling toy box but we love our toys. Anyways we just returned from Newfoundland after a two week road trip in the beast which was the reason I built this in the first place. Was it worth it?  You bet! Newfoundland is frigging amazing.20220826_173328.thumb.jpg.4748ac03d6a75337011ccc0b7eaa4cca.jpg

What brand bags did you use?  Seems super lame they leak out that quick.  Looks like a sweet rig tho.

Firestone. They would slowly bleed down over a week or so and filling at the bumper was a pain. The In cab compressor and guage with bleed off valve allow you to adjust pressure on the fly. I actually like to play around and drop the pressure then raise it underway. It really shows what a difference the bags actually make. The hitch has an extension so with the boat it will really do the Carolina squat.
