I think it is best to keep a swap stock to start with, especially if you haven't done many. 
Lot's of things to keep track of and possibly trouble shoot and being able to use a shop manual for the appropriate engine system will make your swap life simpler.

The biggest advantage that way is you can sort out and issues pertaining to the swap before adding in improvements, spare yourself compounded problems.
