Block Coolant Plug Missing

So I finally got my rebuild done, engine is in, everything is connected and looking beautiful!

 

I fill the radiator up with water for the break in and it starts pouring out of the side of the block...after a mild heart attack I realized the coolant plug was missing from the block. It was in when I took it to be boiled out and just overlooked making sure it was there when I got the block back.

 

Long story long...what do I need to put in there, I can't find the proper plug on line dang it!

I assume this is for a 521? L series?

 

Well the 521 L16 has different part numbers for it's core plugs than all other L16/L18/L20Bs.

 

Its 11023-58000  or 00933-14000 and fit the 521 L16

 

All other L16s like in the 510 and the early 620 and all other L18 and L20Bs are 11021-21000.

That's what it seems like. I am going to call them and ask, I bet they have about 657 laying around.

It doesn't sound like the OP is referring to the freeze plugs, but the threaded block drain plug. It is possible, easy even, to tap that to NPT and use a plug from the hardware store.

Yes, the block drain above the starter.... 08931-30410.... used in all L Z SD and A series engines

Looks like you can still get them at the dealer....

 

Basically a 1/4 bspt plug....

 

As said before the hole can be tapped as a 1/4 npt, which can be found a lot easier.... no need to redrill just run the tap in and use the npt plug as a gauge..

I think some of them were brass, but definitely not on later engines.

I actually saw a block in a wrecking yard with a 3"" long frozen dong hanging out with a core plug on the end. I was afraid to touch it.

This is supposed to be an L16 620. TI think my '76 710 is brass looking.

Sure looks like brass from here, but maybe it's part of the camouflage you got on your engine. It could just be rusty.
