Oops........I did it again....1971 1800sss build

Recommended Posts

I finally decided it was time to get me a coupe.................hence the reason white 510 is going stock.  As you may know James brought over 4 more shells from Japan recently and I have had at least 2 previous deals fall through because I got cold feet.  James let me come up and see the cars first and I almost got cold feet again.  I left thinking its not my time yet....... again..............well after sleeping on it and negotiating I was able to work a deal.  I didn't take the cleanest shell by any means but got suckered into the VIN #.  Plans are to pull the coupe parts from cactus green and replace them with sedan parts.  Use the drivetrain I recently acquired from Red and suspension and brakes I acquired for the white car.  First order of business is to replace metal panels then decide if I want a beater runner or get the shell painted first.  I have almost everything I need to finish it with the exception of the "coupe" script emblems.

Interesting how much longer the coupe is than the 2 door sedan. Looking forward to what you do with them. 🙂

It does look that way, huh?  They are actually the exact same dimensions from the hood and trunk line down!  The only difference on the bottom half is the structure inside the rear interior panels to allow for panels that have armrests inside the body structure....other than that they are identical (obviously taillight openings are different as well as no rear side markers and different front markers, fender mirrors, etc.) but SHAPE is the same!

The low roof line and slanted back window totally changes the look of the car.

Looks to be in really good shape. But man are you missing a lot of parts for that thing. You want to buy a A/C unit ?

missing TONS of parts.  Also bunch of rust lol. mostly floor pans, will post pics shortly.  No need for AC but thanks 🙂

I couldn't afford to buy one at your level LOL.

Goal is to keep all 4 rhd. Reason I need to sell the white 69

So while I was up looking at the cars I had NO intention of buying lol........however I managed to snap a ton of pics of the condition of the shell.

It spoke to me due to the VIN as already mentioned and the original paint.  There is quite a bit of rust but from what I can tell the majority is in the floors and won't be seen lol.  No clue when I will take care of it so progress will likely be slow.  Should I finish the 69 quickly and can sell for decent money that is when things will take off 🙂

For now enjoy pictures of RUST!

This is an 1800 510 but not a coupe 'VIN' number.

all of the coupe shells I have seen started with P510 or H510 even though they are known to be KP510 and KH510.

Carter - can you shed any light from your coupes???

Just heard from a friend that has a true 1800sss that JDM shells were VIN'd H510 or P510 while out of japan (for instance south africa) would be KP or KH

I am open to others opinions of course.

I am VERY familiar with that article.  Brilliant.  I thought the same thing which is why I was perplexed when seeing the coupes.  From his article the data plate appears to only show the H510 also..............hmmmm

I guess the data plate could be a sedan.  i am sure we will get to the bottom of this.  It is pretty obvious my shell is a coupe........

For what its worth I just checked mrbigtanker thread and his firewall VIN is H510-000422 on a true 1800sss.  Either way got myself a coupe shell and can't wait to build it 🙂

Bluebird Coupe VIN numbers (on the cowl or data plate) are either P510 (1600) or H510 (1800).   The KP or KH designation is for parts reference only (to help differentiate the 2-door sedan from the Coupe), the data plate and the VIN number on the cowl will NOT show KP510-  or KH510.   If you really wanted to go full Otaku, the model designation for this car would be a KH510TK.

From the VIN number, you have yourself a very nice 1971 1800 SSS Coupe-- welcome to the club.

Thanks for clarifying Michael!!!!

Will you ever do a Ratsun build thread on your car?? I love seeing updates on IG but would love to hear the story.

It's been cleared up now by Michael but mine are both P510 VIN cars.  '69 1600SSS and '70 1600SSS.

For interest sake - my Bluebird 4dr sedans are both N150 VIN cars - '71 1400DX and '72 1400DX.

No update...............but I realize when I saw the car I didn't take any full shell photos.  Craig sent me the 4 below from when it was in Japan.  Thanks Craig!!!

Also scored a center console badge 🙂  after a 3 year search....
