Dogleg 5 speed reverse switch?

Recommended Posts

Very close to getting my 510 going. Need a working reverse light for inspection.

It's a 63A2 and has 2 switches. One had both wires broken off inside the rubber boot. I fixed the wires and reinstalled it. The trans is in reverse, but neither switch is showing continuity with a multimeter.

So, what do the switches do? What am I doing wrong?

First, something simple, reverse is upper left above first gear.

R...2...3

N. N .N

1..3...5

There are 3 possible switches on the 63A transmission. A top gear, neutral and a reverse. The first two are for the emissions system. The reverse is lowest n the rear case. Take the switch out and check that the plunger is working and contact being made. 71B 4 and 5 speeds have the same switch as does the 5 speed in the '79 B310 aka 210. The part number is 32005-K1000

I think most of the 70's into the 80's reverse switches are the same, having different part #'s for varying wire lengths & perhaps terminal style.  We just bought a standard Datsun Z car 5speed reverse switch for a CA18DET swap that we are doing...........worked perfectly.  I buy OEM switches, as the aftermarket seem cheaply made.  I buy all of my OEM Datsun parts from Riley at Lynchburg Nissan in VA 800-443-2117 or parts@lynchburgnissan.com!  He can tell you the details about the various part #'s, but now I see you are in AU, so find a good Nissan dealership that will help you with a classic Datsun!

Hi all, new to the group and looking forward to learn! Bought a 69 510 with the dogleg 5-speed installed. For the reverse lights, the previous owner just wired a switch on the dash that you flip manually when you go into reverse to turn on the back up lights. Is there a way to wire the back up switch in the trans to the lights?

Sure is. You can re-create the original 510 wiring. But it may still be in the car, poke your head under the floor and take a look to see if there are two wires not connected to the transmission.

In my 73 that was a race car and is going back to the street, I had to add the wires heading to this switch.  I had to dig into the harness and locate where it originated.  I think it was at a splice.  I can look for my info if you need it.  I believe the wires in the engine compartment are red/black stripe.

Consult a 510 wiring diagram.

For 510, the dash wires go to the brake pedal stoplamp switch

* red/black stripe going back

* red/white/blue coming from the fuse box

In the engine compartment there is a relay

And it gets complicated if your car is an automatic, as the circuit goes through the inhibitor switch

The  reverse light switch is connected to the ignition switch side of the fuse box. Ignition has to be on for reverse lights to operate. The other side of the reverse switch (also Red/Black wire) goes directly to the reverse lights and to ground completing the circuit.

The stop lamps and horn relay are hot at all times and do not require the ignition switch to be on, thus the reverse lights and stop light switch are not connected.

Automatics have the reverse switch on the 3N71B transmission interlock that has to be in the reverse position. The 3N71B does not use a relay for this and it was only on the pre April '71  Borg/Warner 35s
