EDM620
Spending some "quality" time making the tail light housings fit up nice and tight. The aftermarket "generic" housings didn't initially fit up real well so I was thinking this is what I paid for, then compared to the OE housings and other than the brackets lining up better, the overall profile didn't fit any better. WTF, is that as good as it was in '76? So after spending many hours screwing around I have patterns made for gap fillers both sides, that will also allow the brackets to bolt up solid in addition to the body lines matching up better. Not perfect, but way better. I'm no body man and have almost no patience to do that stuff. Cardboard templates are made, tomorrow I'll see how well I can massage some metal to fit. I'm not building a show truck, so fingers crossed what I do will be good enough. 3 Quote Link to comment
EDM620
Much time spent making the first of the 2 side fillers, if I were a body man then I maybe would have spent half the time on that instead of finding other things to do... Tomorrow I break out the welder Quote Link to comment
EDM620
Got the Left side made, not great work but it works and is solid. Fits the body lines much better. Tomorrow I should have the Right side made and installed, then I can look at the filler panel in between where the license plate + plate light + booster terminals will all live. The front valance had an odd chunk cut out of the center support so tended to that as well today. Mucking about with ideas for the front signals/park lights. Yes I will use the front bumper. 2 Quote Link to comment
EDM620
Put together another mockup for the valence fog light. I'd done some initial work on this long ago and had already run the wiring for it. The mounting design is easily modified to allow beam adjustment. Soon as I confirm that I can/will run the headlight halos as the DRL and signals I can finish off the valence. It does mount up real nice and solid now. Further bent my brain around my license plate mount/booster terminals and think I have a solution that will keep everything compact. I'll finish off the RR tail light housing then screw around with more CAD to make sure my ideas will work. 1 Quote Link to comment
EDM620
Almost ready to weld up the filler for the R tail light housing. The OE housing does fit better, at least the bracket bolts line up, the rest of the fit otherwise the same. Mocked up my license plate mount with couple options for placement of the booster terminals, kinda partial to the sideways mount though don't know if there would be any advantage to either method. Connection speed isn't a concern, just has to be easy enough to latch onto with booster clamps. Quote Link to comment
EDM620
Well I got myself a wee bit distracted and spent time on the front valence/signal lights instead of focusing on the R tail light housing. My mock up of the fog light mount was kinda unfulfilling, so I had to see what it really would look like before I truly commit to this arrangement. Connected the halo's to see if I want to run both lights as signals or if running one as the DRL will be good, and I think the lights are pointing to the decision. These are lit up only on a 9V battery for the test. Did a quick test fit of the hood, and there is definitely a clearance issue, next is to decide how to work around that. I might make a "power bulge" or maybe a scoop. Tomorrow maybe I'll focus on what I was supposed to do today... 1 Quote Link to comment
EDM620
Been poking away at my "To-Do" list and have my rear license plate setup done complete with my booster points for the under bed mounted battery. Did some looking at the air clearer, want to run the stock setup but have clearance issues. One option is to cut a hole in the hood and put some kinda scoop or power bulge on to gain the small space I need (basically opposed to cutting into a hard-to-find item like a hood) or maybe by tweaking the motor mounts I can drop it enough. Aftermarket air cleaner not wanted, but maybe something from a later model car with remote filter box might work. I couldn't squish the play dough any further without possibly bending the hood, but there is zero clearance. Quote Link to comment
Rustbin
Do you think you have enough room to cut the part of the air cleaner that fits on the carb and lower the air cleaner housing to get it to fit? Quote Link to comment

Off the top of my head I doubt there's enough room, but every bit I can gain may be enough. Thanks for the suggestion. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Did I already say dual sidedrafts? 😁 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
FYI, on the older Dakotas (and some of the 4.0L Wranglers), Mopar used this kind of "hat" on the thrrottle body to remote mount a filter. Been thinking of using one for awhile... It has a flat-ish base that could likely be tweaked to fit your carb? 1 Quote Link to comment
EDM620
I like the look of that! Gonna check it out, Thanks Quote Link to comment

The dajiban used the Spectre low profile carb hat, like this: https://www.hptautosport.com/products/spectre-plenum-single-low-profile?variant=37696146636978&tw_source=google&tw_adid=&tw_campaign=21874437043&tw_kwdid=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21870566780&gbraid=0AAAAADp7S9MgzU4eKWD_wvTyaehZD73bF&gclid=CjwKCAiAh5XNBhAAEiwA_Bu8FS8Irtklh7Om4in-CyFPLlcZEusSWVLARrbHvUg4g3O-VIvQYuCsLxoC2XwQAvD_BwE From there it has a corrugated hose to a remote mounted K&N cone filter up front. I actually have the Dodge hat, but I left it at Tim's work and I need to pick it up from there some day... 😄 I can take measurements of the Spectre, if need be, but the Dodge will have to wait a bit. From the center mounting screw to the edge (where filter/tube mounts) is 9.5". Width at carb is 7.5". Overall thickness at the carb is 2.4". I will try to get the measurements off the Mopar one soon. 👍 Edited March 7 by datsunfreak Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Did some googling around for different carb hats and saw this neat one on etsy, 3D printed and very compact. Nice price too! https://www.etsy.com/listing/4434245994/low-profile-4-barrel-carb-throttle-body?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_ps-a-electronics_and_accessories&utm_custom1=_k_CjwKCAiAtq_NBhA_EiwA78nNWMkMIxizkUgddZK-G0j4DIOomXudi9qfvgDhETgj17ImDB_zFOeLqxoCTjUQAvD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_22634398512_180193307909_756461321195_aud-2320558161823:pla-315906365651_c__4434245994_12768591&utm_custom2=22634398512&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22634398512&gbraid=0AAAAADtcfRK59a5xZoVKG7MI3cISICfkx&gclid=CjwKCAiAtq_NBhA_EiwA78nNWMkMIxizkUgddZK-G0j4DIOomXudi9qfvgDhETgj17ImDB_zFOeLqxoCTjUQAvD_BwE Quote Link to comment
EDM620
5 hours ago, datsunfreak said: this neat one on etsy I have that exact one on order, fingers crossed it fits. I was going to go with the taller one noting it is only 1" taller but figured that since my space is so tight the low profile might work better. Base is sized for 4bbl (5 1/8") but the Hitachi is 3" at the neck. Hope to have it in my hands in another week. Looking at remote air filter housings and I still have space issues to contend with. Have also done a quick measurement of clearance between tie rod and oil pan, I'm seeing 3/4" clearance but haven't double checked lock-to-lock. So dropping the engine down say 1/2" remains an option at this point. I really don't want to cut into the hood, they are too rare now plus it already flexes a lot. FWIW, I tried the Edelbrock triangle air filter but it is actually slightly taller than the OE unit, so it has been sent back. 1 Quote Link to comment

I meant to mention this one other option. We did a Z20S swap in a 1200 and ran into a similar issue and used this Pipercross unit. It has a sort of internal skeleton, but it's 95% foam, so it just smooshed up against the hood and did fine. https://www.demon-tweeks.com/us/pipercross-px400-direct-fit-air-filter-for-weber-dgv-dgav-dgas-carburettors-384651/?srsltid=AfmBOoqhQjMK5XZnvN5TolwkFjn4KacA_yT5o2k9_WPRy2YFqTYXcTQk Edited March 10 by datsunfreak Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
And that project is currently running one of these: http://www.turbodatsun.com/images/KN_air_bonnet_combo_photo.jpg We are running a (IIRC) 3 inch hose from that to the firewall with a K&N filter hidden inside the dash. 😁 Quote Link to comment
EDM620
Finally got off my ass and back onto the project. Excuse is my bad L hip has been kicking me and I'm not into being a contortionist. First off I completed the wiring I have successfully been avoiding, then cleaned up the floor and prepped for the carpet. Began with a rough layout to see what needs to come through and where. My seats use a raised post with locator pin which makes those holes a bit big, plus I have the small harness for the seat belt connector. The big harness that goes through the floor under the passenger seat was more difficult, I tried to see if I could just run it under the carpet but didn't like that. So 4 holes were needed. It's notable that the carpet kit is for a 720KC which is close but not exactly the same, and I suspect the 720 floor pan is a bit flatter, certainly a wider trans tunnel. That led to the second fitting after mapping out the penetrations. The rear panel mounts provide decent securement of the carpet, and I've made some curved retainers to tighten the fit over the hump. By now my hip was telling me quite clearly to knock off the contortions so I'm done for the weekend. The color I chose for the door bottoms works very well with the carpet color. 3 Quote Link to comment
