Need advice on Alternator for 1968 Datsun 520 J13

I understand that the 520 has a very small engine compartment. The J13 and even the L16 powered 521 have to clear the idler arm just below it and have a small diameter. I would start looking at a 521 alternator. Another possibility is one from a '73 through '77 620. These were also small diameter and might clear. One disadvantage of all of these alternators is the outputs are low. I think the J13 is only 28 and ranges up to 38 on the 620. Adequate only. All Datsun or Nissan alternators from'78 on are internally regulated, where your J13 has an external regulator. These won't work without a few minor modifications to your wiring harness.

The first thing I would do is replace the 520 Idler arm assembly with a 521 idler arm assembly.  Same part less bulk, gives much needed room for an alternator. 

 

I do not remember what the bracket mounting hole layout is on the side of J13.
