Brandon Lewis
Anyone find an aftermarket alternator that works on the J13? I've tried several and nothing seems to fit or its made for the drivers side of the truck. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Brandon 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I understand that the 520 has a very small engine compartment. The J13 and even the L16 powered 521 have to clear the idler arm just below it and have a small diameter. I would start looking at a 521 alternator. Another possibility is one from a '73 through '77 620. These were also small diameter and might clear. One disadvantage of all of these alternators is the outputs are low. I think the J13 is only 28 and ranges up to 38 on the 620. Adequate only. All Datsun or Nissan alternators from'78 on are internally regulated, where your J13 has an external regulator. These won't work without a few minor modifications to your wiring harness. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
The first thing I would do is replace the 520 Idler arm assembly with a 521 idler arm assembly. Same part less bulk, gives much needed room for an alternator. I do not remember what the bracket mounting hole layout is on the side of J13. Here are some links that might help. https://ratsun.net/topic/33087-looking-at-an-alternator-upgrade/ http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki/index.php?title=Basic_Alternator_Wiring https://ratsun.net/topic/39970-l520-j13-alternator-mod/ https://ratsun.net/topic/68653-j13-alternator/ Quote Link to comment
