Alternator mount

Alright ratsun fam, my alternator Bottom mount just snapped yesterday and I’m looking to replace ASAP , is there any universal one or what other car mount would work for me? Cause I’m heading to the junk yard

The mount broke? Or the bolt that goes into it?

 

Is it cast iron or formed steel?

If the bolt broke, an old trick is to drill it out from one end to the other (so the bolt goes clear through) and use an L series head bolt (or other 10mm bolt). You will need to drill out the alternator lower bolt holes too. Broken lower alternator mounting bolts are common.

The mount between alternator and the block would commonly snap mounting bolts because there were only 2 on the L16/18. The L20B was re-designed and has three larger ones.

The mount , cast iron.

Mine is the L20b , and it’s the top mount in the pic

Can I use a mount from a d21?

.... maybe. My info shows the Datsun cars and Z series truck mounts are the same but 620 truck are not. The L18 and all L20Bs used only in the 620 and the first year (1980) 720 truck were the same. In my picture you can see they are slightly different. The top one mounts the alternator higher than the bottom one  by 3/4"?

 

You could try one but clearance between the 620 alternator and the idler arm below it is very close. A lower mounted alternator would not be good.

Hard to believe the bracket broke. I wonder what caused that to happen.

Indeed, wouldn't the alternator 'ears' snap off?

 

 

Loose fit alternator and over tightening. Isn't there a spacer used on the top one??
