datzenmike
The above doesn't really eliminate the regulator as the cause of anything. Unplugging the regulator (either one) should not stop the engine being turned over by the starter or it firing up. If everything was dead then the battery cables were not making contact on the battery posts, or the other ends (the starter solenoid (positive) or the ground on the head (negative)) were loose, or... ALL power to the fuse box passes through the fusible link, so if it is bad, loose or burned out, this could cause everything to not work. Somehow when your were disconnecting and reconnecting things you made it make contact. Until this charging problem is solved EVERYTHING is suspect. Begin with the following so we don't waste time assuming they are working... Clean and tighten battery cables to terminals. Check the positive cable is tight on the starter terminal and the other end of the negative cable is tight on the side of the head. Somewhere on the negative cable there should be a ground wire to the sheet metal body... it can also be a thick wire from the engine block to the body. If you can't find one make one out of 12 gauge wire. Everything electrical has to be able to get back to the battery negative ground. Someone may have removed this wire and forgot to reattach it. Fusible link... This will be attached to the battery positive cable near the post. It will be Green or Black, about 3-4" long and have plastic connectors on the ends so it can be removed and replaced. It's basically a high amperage fuse that connects EVERYTHING electrical (except the starter) to the rest of the truck. It may look alright but not making contact. If crispy or melted looking then it's very suspect. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Dat620 just to let you know the Echlin brand volt regs suck. They are black made in USA I run the solid state ones and the Japanese jmade old style. mever thought of it until now Crashed is most likely correct as it’s more stable than the old contact type voltregs. one can rebuild a alt but the bridge rectifier is 40$ then bearings etc..... 1 Quote Link to comment
