Hi, new 73' 620 owner
Not engaging clutch to start 73' 620
Q: is it normal? 

more info: shifts normal, ect ect. 4spd trans l20b

First post: thanks in advance for all replies for this journey we shall take and with many other questions to follow. I'll try my best to answer as I go if i can put my few cents in.

521 trucks did not have a neutral safety switch.   Back in the 1970's, we did not have "nanny cars" that had on dash back up cameras, lane departure warnings, tire pressure monitoring systems.  It was assumed you knew enough to put the transmission in neutral, and push the clutch pedal in when cranking the engine.

The original concept was not a starter per se.  It was an accessory to pull a stalled vehicle off the tracks before being hit by an oncoming train.  Then the idea of a self starter vs hand cranking hit home.

My '70 Dart had an interlock. I disconnected it because I wasn't an idiot.... and I could crank the car off the RR tracks if I had to. The real reason was the thrust bearing on the crankshaft grinding away with little oil pressure at 20 below.
