The Beercan - A 1980 B310 Sunny

Recommended Posts

I have seen this little car parked off Smokey Point Blvd for a while. First it was there and not there like any daily. Then one day it was parked in a different spot and sat for a while, a while later a tarp covered it and there it sat. I had got to missing The Celica and Shonuff was pestering me about getting another thrasher. I decided to see what the story was on this one.

Story goes, about 30 yrs ago a couple immigrate to the US, they get this car as their first car. Kids grow up and learn to drive in it and then the daughter had a bit of a kerfuffle in it.

Perfect base for our purposes. I purchased it March 2018 for probably too much lol.

So meet The Beercan, or Sunny the Donut Machine. 😄

Not a bad little runner :)

I drove the thing to Nuffs work and he drove it the rest of the way out to his place.

Surprisingly it drove straight really straight.
Fucking thing vibrates like crazy though as the output on the trans and pinion are toast.
So there it sat until this weekend (the snow finally melted)
Used a 411 wheel to drive it out, the original wheel was a bit warped.

Time for some entertainment value.

Door open, much success. It also closes lol.

Anyone interested in some interior pieces? The seats are trash unfortunatley

We were able to pull the side out far enough to stop the wheel from rubbing.

CJ approved.

Already drifting lol

IMG_8640.JPG

Lets go do some testing, does burnouts and still vibrates lol.

Little bit of a trail test.

IMG_8646.JPG

I already located a door and a possibly a quarter panel but I think I will wait for a straighter one of those.

Some interesting stuff in that yard.

IMG_8649.JPG

Weird hooks on this re-skinned gate.

If anyone is interested in the A14 let me know.
I have other plans for this thing :)

Also Shonuff picked up a cheap Celica that will be built to thrash as well. I forgot to take pics of them parked together, but it is in the background in one of those pics.

The Celica - RIP to the OG.

4 or 5 speed?

4-speed, but it is a bit of a mess at the output end.

Most of the parts pulled from this are going into Daves pumpkin, but not all.

Apparently CT specialties powdercoating  is like Arnold's on happy days .. To cheap to change the sign.

Working on figuring out how to make a Facebook event thing-a-ma-bob to announce on there this time..  I mostly only do facebook if someone tells me to be on there ,, which is quite a bit lately ,, but still not that familiar with buttons

Got to play with this one a bit yesterday. Learned interesting things about single cam KA's

This is a 1990 D21 KA, rear sump. I am swapping on a front sump setup.

Things never mentioned... or mentioned, but in the small print.

Dip stick. Checking the oil will be fun as there is no holes machined for the front sump stick location. You can see the indention where it should be in the pics.
Sump support. The front sump uses the girdle to mount the support bracket, I left it hanging for maximum ghetto.
The 240sx motor has nice lower braces for the bellhousing, no provisions for this in the D21 block.

...and back to work

Photo of the trans mount location for later reference.

IMG_0103.JPG

Comparison.

KA trans mount face to rear mount C/L is approx 22"
A Series trans mount face to rear mount C/L is approx 17-3/8"

Need to make up 4-5/8"

IMG_0106.JPG

Good ol A series, this one is going to izzo for Pumkins 210.

Ready for 2X powerup.

IMG_0108.JPG

It actually went in pretty easy. Main clarance issue at the moment is the O2 sensor/steering box and the EGR tube across the back of the motor.  Mostly the EGR tube, will take car of that next time.

Yes there is a motor under the entire D21 truck harness lol

IMG_0119.JPG

You can kinda barely make out the motor mount in this one. Motor needs to go back about 1"
You can also see the tight space at the O2/steering box.

A series overview.

Some IRL photoshop.

Will need some lift and sawsall.

Finished work and loaded up to head home.

A bit of BBQ and a view before heading home.
