Charley Hudson
Starter won't self excite, replaced starter, still won't self excite, so I installed a push button jumper to get the alternator going, it works, but sometimes, the battery doesn't charge. Also lights and horn don't work at all unless engine is running.motor dies, lights out! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
First of all stop replacing things. Gets expensive and there's the real possibility of putting a bad part in that you will never believe has added a problem to your real problem because it's new. Your old Nissan starter is still likely better than the cheap $40 POS re-built one you replaced it with. Answer these questions. Have you cleaned and tightened the battery terminals and the cable clamps? Are the clamps on the cable ends in good shape or are there screws driven into then to make contact. Are they the crappy bolt on ones? Is the positive cable in good shape and secure and tight on the starter solenoid? Is the negative cable secure and tight where it's bolted to the engine or head? Inspect the fusible links that are connected to the positive side of the battery. Do any look burnt or crispy??? Is your alternator belt tight? Is the two wire plastic plug secure and snug fitting in the back of the alternator? Is the positive output wire secure, clean and tight? Does the red charge light come on when you turn the ignition to ON??? Does it go out when the engine is running? If yes to both... Borrow a good battery or disconnect yours and use jumper cables to a good battery and see if the problems go away. 1 Quote Link to comment
