Anybody read Japanese? (found in my '71)

Sounds like it's Chinese... wasn't expecting that.

 

The character is Chinese, but from Japan that would make it the Kanji system but the meanings are usually related.

 

So I asked my wife who reads Chinese and she recognized it as "le-ow" (super poor phonetic there) which translates to "small poorly built house" but she said it actually can have multiple meanings so still a bit of a riddle.

 

My best guess is it probably translates to something like "structure assembled".

Someone on another site came up with "dormitory", which is also fantastic.

Dormitory seems to be the best translation and that character in Kanji matches the Han character and the phonetic pronunciation of of the word "liao2"

 

So I wonder if the colloquial usage would be the same as the English usage of "housing" which would make sense for a metal car part in this context.

 

Kanji  :dormitory, hostel, villa, tea pavillion

Han  :shanty, hut, shack
