ByStickel
I found this writing under the dash of my '71 Z. It looks more like a message than any normal marking on an assembly part. I'm hoping that someone knows what it says. 1 Quote Link to comment

89Sunny
Google translate app has a camera function. Just choose Japanese and point the camera at it and it will translate it. Quote Link to comment
ByStickel
Yes, very cool. Sounds like it's Chinese... wasn't expecting that. Quote Link to comment

The character is Chinese, but from Japan that would make it the Kanji system but the meanings are usually related. So I asked my wife who reads Chinese and she recognized it as "le-ow" (super poor phonetic there) which translates to "small poorly built house" but she said it actually can have multiple meanings so still a bit of a riddle. My best guess is it probably translates to something like "structure assembled". 1 Quote Link to comment
ByStickel
I'm sticking with "small poorly-built house". That's the best! Someone on another site came up with "dormitory", which is also fantastic. Thanks, Dguy! Thanks everybody. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
What would the Chinese make of me saying I had a BBC? Would they get that right? Quote Link to comment

Dormitory seems to be the best translation and that character in Kanji matches the Han character and the phonetic pronunciation of of the word "liao2". So I wonder if the colloquial usage would be the same as the English usage of "housing" which would make sense for a metal car part in this context. Kanji 寮 :dormitory, hostel, villa, tea pavillion Han 寮 :shanty, hut, shack Sources: https://jisho.org/search/寮 %23kanji https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/寮 https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/寮#Chinese https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/寮#Japanese Thanks for the puzzle! This was fun. Edited February 16, 2019 by Dguy210 2 Quote Link to comment
