carterb
We had a little streak of unseasonably nice weather in the NW so I grabbed some pics while the sun was shining. 510 day 2019!!! 3 Quote Link to comment

carterb
I've been worse at keeping up with the build thread than I have at actually working on the car... 🥴 Back in May, one of my electric fans started to make some awful bearing noise There is one between the grill and radiator and one between the radiator and engine I contacted Hayden fans to get their recommendation on a replacement. carterb
Time to get behind that grill I had unplugged the noisy fan for a while - didn't seem to hurt the cooling and got rid of that terrible bearing noise 'till I could swap the fan. This was NOT easy to get out of there. Uh oh! Replacement fan is 2" larger than original Abort abort!!! 1 Quote Link to comment
carterb
Fan for life though! (pun intended) The Hayden service rep that made the mistake giving me the original replacement part number says - "no problem, I'll send you a couple of new fans no charge"! Seriously?! That is some incredible above and beyond service. Need to install these soon! Oh, and don't forget about this: I confirmed my clutch master is indeed leaking - replacement ordered. but first... carterb
I made an attempt to swap the mirrors to genuine Nissan units but the mounting base (I think these are from a 210?) are a little smaller and don't cover all the holes in the door from 40+ years of aftermarket door mirror swaps so I aborted that for now. And went on to this! What's in the box? One VERY nice carpet kit from www.StockInteriors.com Pulling up the factory rubber floor mat reveled a little surprise That gas leak that started this whole project made a real mess of the tar sound deadening But look what else I found! Remember that guy that rode with me at the autocross! I found his $$$ BMW keyfob $$$ !!! I texted him immediately and ended up sending it back to him. He was pretty happy 'bout that! Nothing else really cool though. 'Cept this matchbook. Anyone know what this place is/was? Hey, quit lookin' at stuff and get to work! We're loosing daylight here: That'll do just fine thank you! Seats look a little out of place now though. Tried to make the outside look as nice as the inside 3 Quote Link to comment

My 2nd 510 was a green two door just the same as yours. Except, stock daily driver, for a couple of years and traded it straight across for a BMW Bavaria 3.0 to tow a trailer across country to Seattle. Called the 510 brick and the Bavaria was bear. carterb
The green FJ 2dr has done continuous duty as my daily driver. Everything has been working great but it runs worryingly rich and also produces oil smoke on start up probably 10% of the time - and not just a little. My guess is I have a leaky valve guide and when that particular valve is open when the engine stops, the top end drains down into the cylinder making a bit of a show... I know these thinks will need attention sooner rather than later. In the mean time though, my friend Pat dropped by in his FJ20 2dr. : ) Quote Link to comment
carterb
Quite often at work we have three 510s together: Sam (wagon), Jeff (tan 2dr) and myself. Always makes me smile. Quote Link to comment
carterb
The weather is starting to turn and my attention is turning to the needs of my car. I bought a wideband O2 sensor to install with the idea of assisting with the tune of the car but before I install it, I need to get it close. A conversation with my friend Dave made me wonder if my fuel pressure might be too high. I'm working on the assumption that at one point in time, the car was tuned right and then something changed. I've never taken a wrench to a set of Mikuni carbs before so I don't want to start by taking things apart and swapping jets and such. I got a universal fuel pressure test kit That will help with this task as well as assist in troubleshooting with the racecar and other future projects. The gauge that comes with the kit is 0-140psi though (for fuel injection) so I bought a 0-20 gauge for use with my carburetor rated fuel pump. I hooked up the T-fitting in-line between the fuel filter and the first carb and zeroed the gauge. Then with the fuel pump on I got a reading of 4.5psi which is pretty much exactly what the pump is rated at. Ted reported to me that the carbs need " 2.84-4.98 psi per the Mikuni PHH Carb Service Manual" while Kelvin said he ran his at 2psi. I could still be on the high side at 4.5 then. Also this reading was with the car idling. I think the voltage is higher when cruising. Not sure if that ups the fuel pump output as well but at a minimum, this makes me think it would be worth running a pressure regulator and seeing if the behavior changes moving the fuel pressure to 3psi or something like that. carterb
It's getting colder and the days are getting shorter I don't see myself working this problem correctly in the next couple of months so I think I will revive Cooper and park the FJ car so I don't do any damage to the engine while running so rich. This was it's last week of work duty for a while... Hang in there buddy... We'll get you straightened out. 1 Quote Link to comment
carterb
If you know me at all you know that all of my cars have names. For whatever reason, this one never got one. Because of that my family has referred to it as "No-name" for the last year or so - which, has now stuck as the name. So, after a long NW winter, it was time to start addressing some of No-name's issues... Here are a couple pictures from March: I think they were prompted by an Instagram "side-shot challenge". Here's the same shot in B&W Quote Link to comment
carterb
In April, I finally swapped the winter tires off of Cooper so I took the Jilba Racing rims off of No-name. In doing so - I looked at the date on the tires. 2008!!! No wonder these things have no traction. They must be hard as rocks by now. We'll deal with that later - for now, let's show off the new shoes I got for No-name. 14" Work Equip Excel 4Hs. More on that later... let's pick up where I left off last summer and finish that electric fan swap. I got the old ones pulled out. And the replacements ready to go in One puller and one pusher - just as it was. \\ With a little luck - I might have even wired them in correctly. : ) Edited June 9, 2020 by carterb Quote Link to comment
carterb
Other things on my list included installation of a fuel pressure regulator and AFR gauge. After unboxing the fuel pressure regulator - I realized I didn't have any 3/8npt x 1/4 hose fittings to install it. Put those on the shopping list. Also, I assume it is okay to block one of the "OUT" ports with a plug? I just want to run this in-line between the fuel filter and first carb. Also, I kind of want to get a base-line AFR reading before I start messing with things so I know if I actually fixed anything or not. I bought an M18 nut to weld to the exhaust to facilitate the installation of the O2 sensor but I need to practice welding in the restricted access I have where I want to place the nut. Or at least - that's what I told myself in the process of talking me out of doing it that day. Instead I started to do some research on the Mikuni Carbs. I have a sneaking suspicion that the "bi-starter" (choke) circuit might be stuck open - making the fuel mixture far too rich. My suspicion is from the fact that the actuators are not currently hooked up - but the motor will start in the dead of winter with no issues at all. I watched a few youtube videos to try and see what this actuator looks like disassembled and also downloaded a manual from www.datsun510.com but nothing showed me what I wanted to see in enough detail for me to dive in. I did notice that my bi-starter actuators are sprung closed (?) in the opposite direction from the carbs shown on the video I watched - but I heard they can be set up in either direction so who knows. Video still: Mine: Anyone have a good diagram showing what that hardware looks like? I was also told by the original builder of the car that it is possible one of the jets has come loose. Up to this point - I haven't been brave enough to pop off the jet cover (or remove the bi-starter cap) since I have exactly zero spare Mikuni parts or gaskets. Tell me I'm worrying too much.
