521 gearbox

Hi folks first time post 2 years into ground up rebuild.

found my LWB 521 under a tree it stopped under 15 years ago, anyway got heaps of questions but today’s is how to remove output shaft out of gearbox, need to put it into box from a 520 and use that as the 521 box is toast

I think he means the mainshaft that runs through the transmission. On the front is the input spline that the clutch disc slips onto. It is separate from the mainshaft but lockes together to form the straight through 4th 'gear'. The mainshaft has all the gears fitted onto it. A major operation to dismantle it

He said "remove output shaft out of gearbox", this kinda sounds like the driveline to me, as I recall it cannot be just pulled out because of that large bolt holding the yoke in.

He also says he wants to use the 520 box(transmission I think) because the 521 box is toast, this makes me think driveline.

As I recall "U" bolts hold the driveline to the yoke, so I am thinking he needs to take out the "U" bolts on the driveline to remove it, I am thinking the transmission is still in the truck.

Over 'here' the 520 and the '69 L521(last year for the J13 engine) cam with a splined driveshaft that just slid into the transmission.

 

Next year the PL521 (first year with the new L16) the spline bolted into the transmission and the driveshaft bolted to it.

 

As Charlie said take the bolt in spline out and the 520 spline slides right in. Or just remove bolt and pull it out to swap another spline in

The donor box doesn’t have the thread on the end of the spline to take that coupling that I need coz it’s a LWB 2 price shaft hence changing the shaft from the original box. 

If u guys are confused now wait till I ask my next poorly worded 20 questions

This is no problem at all. The two piece drive shaft uses a slip joint in the rear drive shaft. This is why the front can be solidly mounted to the transmission spline.

 

Just take the bolt in spline and put a 40mm 'freeze plug' in the hole (where the nut was) and use sealer so transmission oil won't leak out.

I think it's 40mm. Maybe take the spline with you and try for one that fits. Don't forget to de-grease and use some sealer.

Isnt the oil seal sufficient enough why the freeze plug

 

If the tolerances were tight enough to keep oil from getting thru the splines, one would never be able to slide the yoke into the transmission, that is why you need a freeze plug in that hole.

Yep just had a proper look now I understand the freeze plug idea. Again so it’s no problem not bolting the coupling to the spline as the original set up. Now for another question how do u get photos up as they may help with my future questions and maybe u guys may be a little more interested in my progress than folks at home

It's kinda a pain to post photos on this forum, you have to host your photos on a photo hosting site, then get the IMG link and paste it in your reply.

I would suggest Postimage as I know that site, it is easy to describe what needs to be done to successfully post a photo here, but I have a desktop computer, I have no idea how easy it is to use from a hand held computer.

I would not use Photobucket for my photos anymore, the site is hard to use unless you have figured it out.

Do you guys really not know the difference between a bolt and a nut? The hex thing holding the flange to the back of the transmission is a nut. I know it's me being pciky, but there is already clearly a problem with terminology here (USA vs AUS and all that) so let's keep it to a minimum.
