"Peanut head"

Recommended Posts

Was looking at an article on L series engines and their various heads, and found this term for the desirable closed-chamber heads, some of which were SSS heads but some of which were production heads with smaller valves.  The article didn't make clear what years the peanut heads came on.  Anyone know this term and this head?  It seems to me that if one wanted to build a L-16/18/20 with old-fashioned closed-chamber head with a good tight squish-height (instead of a smog-head) this would be the deal-scheneille, yes??

Here's some online info - http://dimequarterly.blogspot.com/2012/02/tech-how-to-l-series-cylinder-head.html

SSS refers to the very hard to find 219 head. It is by far the best cylinder head ever installed on an L series as it came from the factory.

A87 are similar as well as W53, but not all are the same.

Best to read the link above for solid info, and if you're serious about building an engine, you should invest in these two Datsun L series books.

Pretty much what stroffgren said....

But be aware is for an L16.... the peanut head will actually lower compression....

A stock 210 head for a L16 is only has a 38.5 cc combustion area,  peanut heads are 41cc closed, and 45cc on the open heads that go on the L18 and L20b...

Peanut heads are desirable but in my opinion if your not using flat top pistons you dont get the benefit of the quench area.....
