Datsun_Fanatic_720
So I am recently changing the clutch in my 1986 720 and I was wondering how much gear oil I should put in the transmission. Autozone only had the type of gear oil but the amount of oil the transmission requires. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The 71B hold 2 liters or about 2 US quarts. Be sure to use only GL-4 rated oil in 80-90 weight. NEVER use GL-5. If synthetic, or not sure the container must say GL-4 compatible or 'will not harm copper alloys' or 'yellow metal safe'. 2 Quote Link to comment
Datsun_Fanatic_720
So the oil that I got says this Differential:API Service GL-4, GL-5 Non-Synchronized Manual Transmission: API Service GL-5 I don’t know if this is what you meant? Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Take it back for a refund. On their shelf you should find bottles of StaLube GL-4. Back label will say yellow metal safe. If they don't have it, O'Reilly or NAPA will. 2 Quote Link to comment

You have a synchromesh transmission. They use bronze (copper alloy) synchro rings that will be attacked by the extra additives in GL5 gear oil. Use only GL-4 gear oil or marked 'safe for copper or yellow metal'. If in doubt don't use. gato nailed it, NAPA will know. 1 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
My O'Reilly has it. It is the most boring looking bottle on the shelf. Almost completely unnoticeable. Perfect. 1 Quote Link to comment
Datsun_Fanatic_720
How much oil does the diff take? Because I was told this oil could be used in the diff Quote Link to comment

racerx
Get an old garden hose, fill from the top. Use fluid that is recommended by fsm, don't listen to AutoZone, oreillys cst, go by what the book says, U be okay. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
For transmission, two foot of garden hose and a dollar store funnel that will fit the end. Run it down from the engine compartment. For Differential get oil that comes in a squeeze container with a nozzle. Quote Link to comment
