five1oh
Some of the below is repeat from the wanabre but this WAS supposed to be my first build thread on Ratsun……turns out this is #4 This thread is the story of how I was introduced to the Nissan Skyline and how much my desire to own one has grown over the years. When I was 14 years old way back in 1996 I started to think about what car I would like to own. I found myself searching through local issues of the Diablo Dealer or newspapers looking at used cars for sale along with the pictures. I always enjoyed looking at modified cars and older vehicles. I will never forget the first time I saw a picture of a Datsun 510, the picture was a side profile shot of a car and the shape just stuck with me, I had to have one! Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr I started finding other pictures and started clipping out ads of 510’s for sale knowing that it was the ultimate car for me. I have always enjoyed driving and worked at a golf course washing and parking golf carts and learned how to drift, burnout, pop wheelies, 180’s, 360’s, jump, you name it. I LOVED to drive and push the limits of whatever I was driving. As I learned more about the Datsun 510 and its historic racing heritage and independent suspension, etc. I was even more excited. I passed my driver’s test on my 16th birthday and celebrated that night with donuts and drifting in the rain in my parents’ 1987 Jeep Cherokee. I kept searching for a 510 and a few months after I turned 16 I found one for sale in Walnut Creek, CA. I begged my dad to go look at it with me and we went over there on a rainy Saturday afternoon. As soon as I saw the car I knew that I had to have it. It was a 1969 white 2-door. The car was rocking 13x7” Libra’s in the rear and stock steelies in the front. It was pretty low and looked freaking awesome. It was painted the factory egg shell white and the rear libra spokes were painted red. It had the cheapest summit racing bucket seat on the drivers side and the factory passenger seat. There was no rear seat and no carpet. The owner took me for a spin in the rain, which as a 16 year old kid you can imagine was awesome. It was loud and looked amazing. We left there that day with my dad telling the owner we had to talk about it. My dad tried to talk me out of it but I wanted it so bad. He told me to wait a couple days and if I still wanted it we could call the owner back. The price was $2200 which of course I would have to take a loan out from mom and dad. After a few days I still really wanted it and so we called the owner only to find out it was sold…..I was so bummed!! Even back then 510’s weren’t for sale very often and it took me a while to find that one so I was pretty sad for a couple days. About 3 days later I came home from school and my dad told me the owner called him to let him know the previous buyers check bounced and the car was for sale again……YES!!!!!!! Finally I had my very first car Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr It took me about 2 years to pay my dad back because the stupid 510 kept breaking!!!!! There were so many issues, but I loved it just the same. I used the car to deliver pizza and take countless journeys to Santa Cruz, even drove it to Portland a couple times and out to Idaho. My second car was a Datsun 620, then another 510 for autocrossing (still in high school…..while still owning the others LOL). I have always been a work-a-holic and spent every penny I made on cars, just kept buying cars, and parts, and cars, and parts, on and on it goes. When I graduated high school I had two Datsun 510’s, a Datsun 620, and a brand new Chevy S10 Xtreme lol. By the time I was 21 I had owned 20+ cars and by 25 I was at 43 – that was the last time I took a tally……..Things have slowed down a lot since I got married 9 years ago but I am not complaining because without a supportive wife I wouldn’t be able to achieve my dream! five1oh
To date myself my first car was purchased in February of 1998 at the ripe age of 16 LOL. The reason I bring that up is until that point the only car I ever cared about was a 510 and I was learning about the famous BRE and racing heritage and my love for my Datsun grew and grew. The first time I remember ever seeing a Nissan Skyline was with the release of Gran Turismo 2 in December 1999. As I was scrolling through cars starting with Nissan (obviously) I stumbled across this 510 looking vintage Nissan....WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?!?!?!? Remember that this was when internet was just starting to come into normal use. Over the next few years and as I started college I researched more and more about the "hakosuka" and learned of its DOMINANCE in Japan similar to the Datsun 510 on US soil. Inline L motor with DOHC (the racing GTR) and handled like crazy........it was basically a 510 on steroids. While I was completely happy with my Datsun 510's I knew that one day I wanted a hakosuka but had no clue about how to even get one........fast forward to 2005 when I saw one for the first time in the flesh! My buddy worked at ABC Muffler in Benicia and his boss lived in Napa. One day he told me his boss saw a Skyline in Napa, CA and told me where it was. Needless to say I drove there IMMEDIATELY and then a few days later brought my dad. On the property (outside) there was a RHD fairlady Z, RHD Bluebird Coupe, RHD 610 Bluebird SSS with fuel injection, some other datsuns and a beautiful white Nissan Skyline with black overfenders. I took a bunch of pics and knocked on the door but no one answered. I am so upset because I can't find any of the pics  Over the course of about 2 years everytime I was in Napa I stopped by and tried to make contact with the owner unsuccessful EVERY TIME. in about 2008 I got the call I dreamed about......my friends boss called to let me know he saw a for sale sign on the car WITH a phone number!! I went up there IMMEDIATELY once again, and called the owner from outside the house. He was asking $15K!!!!!!! He told me the car sold and the new owner was on the way from LA to pick it up. I told him my sob story of coming up over the years and being a Datsun guy....I drove the 510 up there OF COURSE. I begged him to come out but he wouldn't budge.......I was so heartbroken :bye: Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Fast forward many more years and cars later. The next best thing from a Hakosuka was a RHD Bluebird Coupe.....................I had lined up to buy James White 1969 in 2010 but I passed and bought a 2006 STI.......so stupid! Fast forward a couple more years to December 2013. By this time I was a frequent visitor to JDM Legends website and always saw the awesome Skylines but none were every for sale.....they were always presold. Anyways in December 2013 they had a nice white one with black overfenders ACTUALLY for sale for $50k. Being a car guy I NEVER had money because every spare dollar I gained I would spend on modifying my cars. Saving was NOT normal for me. I realized the prices for these cars kept skyrocketing and knew I needed to buy one soon or I would never be able to. In addition to frequenting JDM Legends website I became a regular on JNC blog and started reading through all of the hakosuka build threads. There were two cars I KNEW came from JDM Legends and underneath all of the shiny paint they were complete TRASH. I knew I couldn't spend upwards of $50k knowing the car would need a full resto so I started thinking about buying a trash car from the start Fast forward to March 2015. I saw an updated blog post on JDM Legends that they had a white Bluebird Coupe that was coming up for sale. I called about it and they told me they had just sold it the day before for $25k!!!!!!!!! I missed out again. Over the course of the 2 previous years my wife and I were really working on a budget to get rid of all debt and start saving. We had about that much in our EMERGENCY fund at the time. Datslocos 5/16/15 - I met up with my friend Red (graffiti 510) and we cruised down to the show. I was driving my beautiful white 1969 two door 510. We hung out at the show and then Red had an appointment at a shop in Manteca to develop some metal flares and other parts for the 510. At the show I saw the white 69 Bluebird coupe that was just purchased from JDML. Anyways Red was taking forever so I drove over to the shop to check it out. Turns out the shop owner was a drifter that teamed up with Hardcore Tokyo. We got to talking and he mentioned his fellow driver Mike was going to open up and importer and could help find me a skyline. After seeing the coupe I decided I HAD to get a car now and was willing to sell my White 510 to help fund the purchase. Quote Link to comment
five1oh
On 5/17/15 I called Mike for the first time and started talking Skylines to see if he could help me. He said he had contacts in Japan and would start looking for cars for me. A few days went by and I got my first email with a few links to cars that were available. One of the cars appeared to be a complete running car with known rust issues but with all the paperwork and interior I desired. I forgot to mention my wife was 9 months pregnant at the time. We went to the hospital on 5/23/15 when she went into labor. In the hospital as my son was born I asked if I could use our "emergency" fund as a downpayment for this car. God bless her she agreed so I made the call to Mike to make it happen. By 5/24/15 Mike confirmed that the car was mine and the seller was ending the auction. Please see below for the auction pictures: IMG_0805 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0806 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0807 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0808 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0809 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0810 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0811 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0812 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0813 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0814 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0815 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0816 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0817 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0818 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0819 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0820 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0822 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0823 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0824 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0821 by five1oh2010, on Flickr 2 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
On 5/27/15 I had to wire 80% of the agreed delivered price OUCH! They were a startup and did not have the funds so basically I was buying the whole car and then when delivered they would get the balance and make their money. Essentially the 'emergency' fund was wiped clean and then I had to start making preparations to sell my 510. The car was shipped to the port in Japan (forget which one) and I received the following pictures mid June 2015: P6131704 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131692 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131675 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131664 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131662 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131612 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131610 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131607 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131606 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131585 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131584 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131583 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131582 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131581 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131580 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131579 by five1oh2010, on Flickr P6131578 by five1oh2010, on Flickr 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
While I was waiting for the car I started ordering parts so that when it landed I would be able to make modifications and drive it. The car came with an L20A with triple 40mm Webers and a 5 speed transmission. My original plan was to buy overfenders (sorry MY dream has flares on it!), suspension, brakes, and wheels. That way when it landed I could throw those parts on it and enjoy it for a while....... I called up JDM Legends and ordered a set of Watanabe wheels, I researched and found Whitehead Performance in Canada and ordered full front and rear Wilwood Brake kit from them WITH rear ebrake still connected. I ordered a REAL GTR grill and taillight surrounds off Yahoo Japan as well as a rear lowering kit with stiff springs. I got the shocks from Whitehead Performance and bought the front weld on coilover and camber plate setup from T3. In addition I also bought a new front Protec spoiler and a CORRECT rear GTR spoiler. I THOUGHT that would be enough to get my car driving and having fun for a while.................... I waited and waited and waited and waited. I got nervous and anxious because months started going by and my car hadn't shipped. The importer was trying to save money and bring other cars too so I understood but at times I thought maybe I got scammed.....it was very nerve racking. You can imagine my excitement when I was told the car was FINALLY shipping and setting sail on the Parsifal on 8/31 bound for Savannah, GA (since my importer was in OH) I took screenshots of the journey LOL: 8/31/15: Parsifal Ship Loc 8-31 by five1oh2010, on Flickr 9/11/15 - near my parents house in Seattle: Parsifal Ship Loc 9-11 by five1oh2010, on Flickr 9/14/15 - just passed my house  Parsifal Ship Loc 9-14 by five1oh2010, on Flickr 9/15/15 - in Long Beach Parsifal Ship Loc 9-15b by five1oh2010, on Flickr 9/20/15 - Mexico Parsifal Ship Loc 9-20 by five1oh2010, on Flickr 9/24/15 - Panama Canal Parsifal Ship Loc 9-24a by five1oh2010, on Flickr Parsifal Ship Loc 9-24b by five1oh2010, on Flickr Parsifal Ship Loc 9-24c by five1oh2010, on Flickr 9/29/15 - Savannah, GA being offloaded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! five1oh
On 10/23/15 my beautiful piece of complete trash arrived to me..........literally 5 months to the day that I agreed to purchase it. The truck driver stopped in the street to unload the car.........not sure why since I worked at a plant that receives Semis all day every day. When I walked out I should have told him to pull it in the lot. The car had 2 flat tires and did not run.....not the best scenario when unloading on the street.....did I mention the battery was dead (and this car has power windows). Anyways I was in complete shock and full of Joy I did not care...........here are some pics of it on the trailer.....the first time my own eyes laid on MY car: IMG_1802 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_1803 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_1804 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_1805 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_1808 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_1809 by five1oh2010, on Flickr 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
............sssssooooooooo in the third picture of the previous post take note of the LARGE rock above the red curb...........um yeah it happened to quote David Spade from Tommy Boy "WHAT DID YOU DO??????!!!!!!" yes the door fell off......... it took 4 MEN to help me push the car into the parking lot (flat tires). While pushing it backwards I had to have the door open to steer (dead battery power windows). The car got some momentum and I didn't see the rock coming and the door completely folded backwards :bye: :( The upper hinge literally broke in half completely severed and the lower hinge cracked through. Once into the lot I stood back and had a MOMENT. I was literally about to cry looking at this pile of S**T that I just WASTED all of our family money on...............having two kids now. I literally didn't know what to do.......press on or give up? Anyways after a couple hours I realized I HAVE to get the car running first and then figure out what to do. five1oh
Here is a couple pics the day I had the VIN verification done by a Benicia Police officer. I think this was 10/29/15 IMG_2082 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2083 by five1oh2010, on Flickr So going back in time a bit. PRIOR to my Skyline being shipped to the USA I sold my insanely clean white 1969 2 door 510........this car was also painted by my friend Eric. With the exception of my red 240z (that I bought off Eric) this was the first full car restoration I had Eric do. He did the metal, bodywork, paint and mechanical assembly on this car. I did the weatherstrippping, interior, windows and finish work. Basically when I got it back it was an empty drivable painted shell. This car was one of the nicest cars around at that time and I got top dollar in 2015......If I had sold it now I would probably get double. It was a sad day to see it go but I finally OWNED my dream car. Between when I sold this white car and WANABRE (about 18 months) that was the only time in my life I DID NOT own a 510 IMG_2963 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2964 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2965 by five1oh2010, on Flickr On the topic of selling vehicles..........not only did I spend the "emergency" fund AND sell the 510.....I also sold my beautiful WRX AND my 1979 Honda Trail 70 and KTM 690 SMC :crying: ......instead I picked up a $1,000 beater '92 Integra couple more pics: IMG_8529 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_7720 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_7722 by five1oh2010, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Ok so I finally had my DREAM car in MY possession at MY house and ready to drive..................................well around that time my friend Eric had just moved back to CA from TX and we had been talking on and off about the Skyline throughout the summer of 2015....He basically told me he wanted to do the car for me and we discussed how it would work and how long and price ETC. ETC. Since the door fell off and I couldn't even get into the car without help I figured may as well start the resto now..... After a big discussion with my wife and telling her I would sell ALL of the other vehicles......WRX, trail 70, KTM 690.....she agreed I could go for it. We were trying to figure out when Eric would start work on it. Well on 11/13/15 I was driving my Integra to work on the freeway and the car lost power and shut down. I made my way off the freeway and started diagnosing the issue. Turns out the timing belt SNAPPED while going 75mph......NOT good!! The Integra is an interference motor....now what the heck was I going to do with no other car??? I called Eric and told him there is no way I can start the resto on the hako WITHOUT having the Integra. He talked me into letting him fix it for me so he could start the skyline. That weekend I towed the car up to him and dropped it off. GOOD NEWS I didn't ruin the motor so he changed the timing belt and the car was back and good as normal. On 11/21/15 I towed the Skyline up and brought the Integra home. The restoration was just starting! Can't wait for the fun stuff we uncover :D :frantics: 1 Quote Link to comment

I can't believe I made it 8 miles..........the front TC rod mount could be bent off by hand.......the entire front frame under the radiator peeled off with NO effort!!!
