Oregon towns to move to

I've got a good friend moving to Oregon. Wants to be within half hour of PDX. He doesn't know the area, just likes the idea of living a bit cheaper than Hawaii. Got his transfer approved and looking for a place to start. Any suggestions or guidance appreciated. He's mid 30's wife two kids.

How far can you drive in half an hour in Portland? At the most about 30 miles, but with traffic? Probably much much less.

If a half hour to PDX, and by PDX I mean the airport, Vancouver WA is also a possibility.

What part of Portland does he want to be 30 mins from? Some parts of Portland aren't 30 mins from other parts.

 

Vancouver is definitely the cheapest but the traffic really sucks across the bridge.

 

If he has kids he will probably be looking for 30mins and good schools, along with everyone else.

Sandy Oregon is about an hour from Portland and half way between Mt Hood and Portland. I’d look there

The Zillow (house & rental hunting) mobile app (website doesn't for some reason) has a "commute" function you can set, you can also exclude areas based on school ratings too.

 

What does he want, rural living? Walkability? Suburbia?

Camas has excellent schools and it's 17-20 minutes to PDX. I use to commute from PDX to Lax. No state income tax and no sales tax in Oregon. Best of both worlds.

If I was to move back I'd move to the East side of Vancouver/I-205 side.

 

 

I could do Wilsonville or Oregon City. Parts of Beaverton wouldn't be so bad.

Canvas has a paper mill which is closing this summer. There are certain parts of town which are uh, rather aromatic.

Great schools though. Vancouver schools aren't bad either.
