five1oh
Installed the fuel rail last night and hooked the AC belt back up. Loving how it is turning out. My carb insulators arrived today so I hope to get the carbs and heat shield mounted and on the car. So far I need to finish the following and then it should be ready to put on the ground and fire up. CAN'T WAIT to hear it now with the triples and exhaust. - mount carbs and finalize linkage - remove factory choke cables - figure out block breather and valve cover breather - fill radiator with fluid - change engine oil and filter - bleed brakes - adjust alignment to be somewhat straight and set ride height - install strut tower bars - install headlight covers - replace headlight wiring harness - rebuild headlight switch - install finished tail panel and rear hatch (once finished) The goal is to drive this car to Datslocos in Manteca on 5/18. five1oh
Because I have a new hatch coming I had to make sure I got the proper badges for the spoiler (432) I will be installing. The following Nissan badge is not made and is unobtanium. Used ones regularly trade for north of $500 when you can find them and that is with pitting/damage. I am super thankful my car still adorns its original on the hatch but I did not want to risk removing it and using it on the spoiler. Thankfully a couple of good friends care about the community and made a SUPER limited run of remakes that were preorder only. Hung from vintage dashes commissioned the project and my friend Brian has a machine shop and made the badges. Boy does it look good!!! Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 3 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So last night while my wife was at the gym I was in charge of feeding the kids dinner so I took the liberty to use the dinner table to assemble my carbs!!!!!!!!!!! five1oh
Installed the air horns and tightened the manifold bolts from underneath the car. What a pain but got it done. I need to figure out how to keep the plug wires from contacting the throttle linkage. five1oh
So I have had new trim for the taillights for months but have been super nervous about pulling them apart to replace it. I finally gathered enough courage to dive in and followed WoodworkerB's blog online. I soaked them in super hot water and was slowly able to peel the lens from the backing. Once the lens was off I broke off the old tabs to remove the trim. five1oh
Once apart I took the lenses to my friend Pavel to polish them using a couple different compounds. The rear of this car is going to be AMAZING!!! five1oh
I cleaned up my battery tray finally 🙂 It just had some surface rust NO cancer which I was happy about. Would have been easier to do it with the carbs and header off but I managed ok lol. five1oh
IT RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Click picture for video, and fyi you can see the painted brake drum in the video. The list of "to do" is getting shorter! Changed the clutch slave and bled last night, downsized the fuel return line to 1/4" because it was too big and leaking during this run video, changed the engine oil. Tonight the goal is to install the headlight relay harness, headlight covers, and adjust the suspension for ballpark alignment and ride height and maybe just maybe put it on the ground!!!! five1oh
So on Sunday I decided to finally get this car on the ground. Prior to now I had already set my ride height to tucking about 2 inches of tire in the rear and an inch in the front. You must remember that this is only my second Z so I am not aware of what that translates to on the ground LOL. I also knew my exhaust hung pretty low so that was what I was worried about. My plans were to lower it onto blocks of wood (my normal procedure since I haven't really owned a low jack before and it was experience to drive my cars up stairs of stacked 2x6's and then jack them. So yesterday I went through my LCA's and TC's and adjusted them to get close to a a good alignment and camber. Once they were tightened down I put the wheels on: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Since the car was sitting on the 6th notch of the jack stands I decided to lower it in stages. First I jacked up the front cross member and lowered the jack stands down to the lowest setting. After that I went to the rear and gently set the car down on a two high stack of 2x6's (again this is my normal procedure). I found that the jack was stuck so I had to raise the car up and add a 3rd layer of wood. Once done I was able to get the jack out..... So I made a little error and I am SUPER thankful it didn't prove to be costly. Again my plan was to get the car sitting on the blocks of wood and then measure for clearance before driving it "down the stairs". Well I wasn't able to do that because I am an IDIOT. I never put the car in gear OR applied the e-brake.........WHOOPS!! As I started to jack the front of the car up and remove the jack stands the car started rolling back off the rear steps! 😨 Thankfully it moved VERY slowly and the front jack stayed under the front cross member and rolled with the car (a total of two feet. I was able to scramble to the back of the car to stop it from going out into the driveway. Also the car was so low the blocks of wood helped the car slow down. Again this happened very slowly but could have been VERY bad. I am SO thankful nothing but happened but please learn from me lol. Here are the pics once I got it off the front jack and onto the "stairs" Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So the next step was to get it fully on the ground.......................WHOOPS So because of my idiot move above I was not able to measure and adjust should the car be too low: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So once it was "on the ground" 😂 I had to figure out how bad it was and figure out how to get it in the air again..... You will see that I kind of scraped up my driveway backing it out into the street realizing I better get it back in the garage ASAP. So I am very thankful my dad gave me a low jack (at least in the front) and I was able to wedge it in behind the rear tire and get it under the rear LCA without hitting the body. I jacked it up there first and then got a normal jack under the rear end to get both wheels off the ground and adjust the rear coilovers. This picture is actually once it was "lifted" but I wanted to show the marks on the driveway. Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr I ended up raising the rear 1 inch and I feel like I can live with this height (once exhaust is tucked obviously) Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 1 Quote Link to comment
