Shakotan (シャコタン) A shakotan car also known as low down style car refers to a style of zokusha (gang car in English) What differentiates a shakotan style of car from other zokusha such as grachan and yankee style is the clean body work instead of large body kits and flares (as it essentially means lowered car).

This thread will attempt to be a build of what I consider the ultimate period correct, factory optioned 510.  While some may argue they did not come this way I will say they WERE sold in Japan however some of the options/modifications may not have been done at the factory.  In my opinion the only thing missing on this car would be the slanted roof (sadly I could not afford a coupe at this time).  Story begins below:

So you guys may have seen "WANABRE".....well I purchased that car because it was an AMAZING deal and started accumulating parts to fix the rest and restore that car.  While my parts list kept growing my mind also wandered and there was one night that I could not sleep and I just kept dreaming.  My thoughts started calculating the cost of rust repair and bodywork on WANABRE and I realized the amount of $$ it would take to make it right would be far more costly then finding a clean shell.......so the next step was to call and visit the keeper.  The other thought was if I am going to buy a shell maybe I could upgrade to a coupe shell (I knew James had two....)...........since I would be using everything off my car it might not be too bad.  The next morning James and I had a lengthy discussion and I set a date to go up and look at the coupes.

The following week I took my dad and we made the trek up to datsunville since we were going to see my other project anyways.  Spent about an hour with James looking over both coupes (a south africa 1600sss and a japan 1800sss).  The South Africa car already had the majority of repairs done and the Japan car needed a bunch of work....they were both the same price.  We left there and went to my good friend Eric's house who has been working on my other car and I told him about the car.  My mind was basically made up to get the 1800sss.  After our visit I went back to James and gave a deposit.  The whole drive home I was super excited and nervous while discussing with my dad and justifying the purchase.  After a night of research I realized there was no way I was going to be able to afford to do it as I would want to do it right and by the time I'd be done I would have way more $$ invested that I could afford and it just didn't make sense.  I called James and he totally understood and I changed plans and mentioned if you find a clean two door let me know.....that brings me to this car.

Of course he had something that would fit my budget and the bonus - factory cactus green!!!!  I have owned a couple blue and a couple white 510's.  While white is my favorite color my other project will be white and I didn't want two white cars so I began looking at factory colors (I love painting in factory colors).  The cactus green was an easy choice for me as I feel it looks amazing........plus I was going to paint a coupe that color...don't think I have ever seen one of those...so it had to be green.  The other small detail which doesn't really matter to most was the year.  While the build date was 1971 it was registered as a 1972 since that was when it first sold.  That now makes three cars I own 1972 and one I would like to someday acquire being a 240z.

The shell was pretty clean with the worst rust being on the roof and A pillars (vinyl top car).  There were also tiny holes in the floor pan in front of the rear seat and a little hole in the right side of the trunk (battery will go there).  The other cool thing about the shell was it had exactly what I did NOT have already....I had two perfect fenders, perfect hood, and decent trunk.  The shell was missing hood hinges but not to worry....my hood came with them :).  My trunk was missing hinges but not to worry....the shell came with them :).  It is like it was meant to be..

Sorry to bore you guys again........on with the pics:

The inspiration (cleanliness)....just a little lower, a little louder, and optioned to the max!

I can't thank my friend Eric enough!  He has amazing skills and got straight to work.  First order of business was the roof:

I met a guy named Pavel a few years back that rolled fenders and he has since rolled 4 of my cars.  I wouldn't trust anyone else and I consider him a friend.  I reached out to him to help me out with the 510 and even though it was a 5 hour drive (round trip) he didn't hesitate to say ok.  That day was SUPER LONG..........I stopped at James on the way up and got there at 9am.  Eric helped me install the suspension...first we had to burn out old bushings.  It took a while to get everything in.  Pavel arrived at 2 as requested and had to wait about 2 hours to start on the rear.  He got going and we ran in to some issues.  There is an inner support structure that I was told previously could be crushed by a fender roller....it could not.

Eric had to bust out the plasma cutter and cut it out.  Once we got the rears "ok" he went to the front.  This was extra difficult due to there not being steering in the car or brakes.  We had to rig some tie downs along with steering rods and my muscles to fight him as he rolled the fender.  Once he mounted the roller we hit another snag..........struts were too damn short for the roller so we had to run to town and buy super long threaded screws with a bunch of bolts to space the top hat down low enough to get him the right height.  Being an idiot I of course only bought three........so we had to wait in between sides while I threaded bolts like a mad man.  Pavel ended up leaving at 10pm and I headed out at 1130 getting home at 2 AM.  The sucky thing is we couldn't even complete it because of the rear issues.  Eric would have to come back another day and tub the rear.

Here is how the car looked after our long day:

So this week I went up and helped get the steering rack in and replace the front coilover springs with 6" springs because the 7 1/4" springs contacted the tires.  We finally got the sucker on the ground and rolling!!!!!!!  Such a huge step:

Thanks Carter and Mattyhacks. Goal is to be on the road by march. Motor will be L-series from wanabre. I LOVE l-series and doubt I will ever want anything different. When I pull it out of wanabre I will be cleaning it up, adding a rebello cam, and currently I am searching for a 120mm intake manifold (if anyone has a lead let me know) Since it will be RHD I don't have to worry about running into the brake or clutch master cylinders. L20b with dual Mikuni 44's

Pic of manifold I NEED below, again please reach out if you want to sell me one:
