KA swap: Best QUIET efi in line fuel pump?

We used an MSD in line EFI fuel pump for the KA24DE swap into a 521.

 

This thing is louder than a horny woodpecker on Viagra pounding away on a steel flagpole.

 

Seriously, I bet you could hear this pump whining and chattering away over a SBC with open headers.

No turbo, not a high fuel demand. I don't want to switch to an in-tank pump. Who has used something that is quiet?

 

There are lots of posts on other forums about noisy MSD in line pumps ..... rubber isolators and even building an insulated shroud apparently don't offer real solutions, So I would like to hear what others have personal experience with.

Make sure it is secure but not so secure it vibrates against the body. Most likely the sound is transmitted by contact with the frame? more than through the air under the car and through the window.  Wrap it in Dynamat sound deadener,. It's way way overpriced but will do the job.

Hi Mike: We should have read the hot rod forums before buying. It is insulated from the frame mount. I don't think any amount of dynamite would quiet this down. I North Korean missile launch is probably quieter...

 

I am trying to research non-vane pumps now as even MSD in its own forums admits these are noisy.

 

I appreciate any recommendations from people with experience with alternatives.

Those 'P' clamps don't do much to deaden sound.

I use rubber isolators on my pump, from McMaster-Carr.

And loop or run longer hoses so it's not too rigid also.

And if your contemplating another pump, I highly suggest a real Walbro in line.

Being a vane pump has nothing to do with sound level.

I doubt the MSD is even made by them. I guessing it's out of china.

 

Not one of the chinese pos Walbro copies that so many online places are screwing people with.

Also, you did run a return line off the fuel pressure regulator, right ?

I have the same issue with my walboro. I wrapped it in a foam coozie and that helps. Mounting it back by the tank would help to. There is a reason for in tank pumps and we found it.

Sound reduction is only secondary or perhaps serendipitous. The fuel cools the constantly running electric motor and for best efficiency all fluid pumps work best pushing not pulling. The largest pump ever made can't pull a liquid vertically more than 34 feet.

And pulling it through that tinny little line that sticks down in the tank doesn't help either.

 

I have my Carter pump mounted right along side of the tank, and about center height.

Lower is better as the inlet gets gravity assist. I realize this isn't always practical. The 510 tank is shoulder height behind the rear seats, an in line could be mounted much lower

You need to put the pump in the tank.

The harder you make that pump work (undersized lines) the louder it gets.  

Picture yourself sucking a malt through a regular straw or a McDonald's straw.  That's what your pump is dealing with.  

 

Take any pump and make it amplify pressure up to 60 psi and you'll also make noise.  Insulate, insulate, insulate.  The best way it to submerge it in fuel.

My aerotek is quiet. I have the foam that  comes with it isolating it from the mount  I am about to install one in the 4x4, It has ZX pump and it isn't quiet. .

Which model Aerotek is that? Thank you all for your comments and advice. If at all possible, we don't want to drop the tank and weld on it.

 

The lines are all new and 5/16. It is mounted very similar to how J2eDeYe did his.

HAHAHA!  They're probably the quietest and strongest way to mount it.  I'd be more worried about the teflon tape getting into the pump.  And the yellow crimp fitting on a small gauge wire, right under a double-clamped fuel line.  Is that a worm-gear clamp on a high pressure line???  No-no!! :poke:

The fuel pump is from a 88 or so ford ranger. They are manufactured by a bunch of people. 

Be sure to mount it low so it stays full of fuel. And put a filter before it. I like to run one at the fuel rail as well in case the pump fails.

They are 3/8 wide 1/16 thick. If they are good for holding aircraft equipment in flight, I think they are ok to hold a pump on a truck.

There is no teflon tape and I wouldn't use any on a fuel system. 

The wire is 12 gauge, from the engine bay relay.

 

The double clamping you speak of, worm gear clamp on the low pressure side of the high pressure clamp. Maybe not optimum, but it hasn't leaked in however long I have been driving the truck. 

 

I also see no problem with the wire and hose routing as the hose is nowhere near the wiring in reality. You are not seeing that the fuel line is coming out towards the screen, note that it appears to get larger at that end.

Try a Bosch 044. There on a myriad amount of German cars, Score one in the bone yard for cheap.

My intake pump is super loud!  It's a Walbro, maybe that's the issue.

2nd generation 200sx pump. Grab it with the mounting bracket. Not silent but you can't hear it with engine running.

That's a great tip. Using an OEM solution is never a bad idea.

I have a 044 type external pump and it's not quiet at all! At idle you'll hear the pump over the engine and that has a 2.5" straight pipe exhaust....

Stock external Datsun pumps tend to be almost whisper quiet, at least the two i have had(280z and 910)

I run an 044 Bosch in my Willys with EFI and its loud as hell.  I run an Aeroquip external pump in the race truck and you can hear it over the open header at speed.  It must be the loudest pump money can buy, even when isolated.  Then again, it pumps more fuel than any other pump in its class, so I guess it function over form.
