Back to working on the car.  First task - determine just how deep the damage goes...

large.756382331_06152022swampthing(1).JP

I stripped the back end in preparation for hammer or sawzall work while Jeff and Paul worked on removing the left rear trailing arm.

From the top, we could see what looked like a stress/bend mark where the arm meets the hub carrier.  (see the cracked paint).  A square put on the stub axle flange shows the back of the arm is NOT parallel to the axle centerline.

large.1538518077_06152022swampthing(2).J

I brought a replacement arm and Jeff grabbed one from his shed.  Both showed that cut nice and parallel.

large.188983835_06152022swampthing(3).JP

We have the culprit!

We stripped down the bent arm and rebuilt a replacement

large.218741853_06152022swampthing(4).JP

Fresh bearings

large.856524194_06152022swampthing(7).JP

Mounted and ready for a wheel and alignment check.

large.1894676072_06152022swampthing(5).J

The alignment was almost perfect.  This proves that the damage was *at least mostly* limited to the trailing arm.  We still can't figure out how this happened without bending the wheel.  Still in perfect balance even!

large.1686361481_06152022swampthing(8).J

Next we spent a little time with some hammers (Jeff says size DOES matter) and coaxed the back end of the car back into shape.  *A* shape, anyway...

large.2051696000_06152022swampthing(6).J

This work did pull the right rear quarter back into alignment within 1/4", but it also showed us that the left rear quarter, trunk floor, and tail light panel are all but beyond repair.  Next step is to proceed with replacement.

So nice knowing though that we could go racing tomorrow if we wanted!  I feel like we dodged a bullet.  If only the Miata had dodged our car...

It is interesting the wheel was fine.  Chassis design engineers for OEMs that I have worked with view the wheel as sacrificial to save suspension components (generally considered the more catastrophic failure).  This impact is quite different than than a pothole or curb hit though.  That is the input force they usually plan for.

Work has been progressing on the car. The next race weekend being our deadline for having it put back together like it never happened... Better get busy!

Here is where we started for the night. The bashing back into shape really helped us see what needed to be cut off the car. A sad thing to behold

IMG_1624.thumb.JPG.f73c87f3f04f0e0256cb252b88c1ae6c.JPG

Jeff and I got started with the demo phase of things. Cut and grind things away until we could see how deep things went. Jeff thought it might look good as a hatch back at this point lol

IMG_1623.thumb.JPG.e0ec6e9cde947d92b72b8eb47386545e.JPG

Side view now. Getting deeper here so we can plan how to seam the replacement quarter panel into place. Is this thing a 2 door or a 3 door?

IMG_1620.thumb.JPG.1ad918b8a805b69dc9dfad513525fb13.JPG

The pile of bent metal kept getting bigger. It would have been a big weight savings if we didn't have to replace it all

IMG_1622.thumb.JPG.dd0ac4563ded6c5ffa07b2700936b9ec.JPG

Here is Sparky (Jeff) cutting away what's left of the awesome mini tub he fabricated right before the race. Sorry buddy!

IMG_1611.thumb.JPG.ecfb251e309b94fdf77211374ab4c89c.JPG

Here is the replacement quarter panel getting some prep before we weld it into place. A bit rusty, but it has enough good material to use here. Looks like the wheel area has already been enlarged for us. The cut out will get even bigger when we are done.

IMG_1627.thumb.JPG.e3b8c33537a8038b4901579eb4290627.JPGIMG_1625.thumb.JPG.50410fa3f27dc5a44f176ffaeab04719.JPGIMG_1626.thumb.JPG.d1525d66412b18f43624a2da5d288bb8.JPG

Speaking of larger wheel openings... We were getting tired of all the noise cutting off parts of the car so we decided to do something fun as a break. Jeff wanted to go with a larger tire size for better traction. 245 width should fit right? Installed one on the non damaged side to check. Yes sir it does with room to spare. Yay mini tub! They look pretty beefy on the car we think.

I wish I had half the talent you guys have. Good on you for saving it. Actually, a buddy of mine who used to rally them told me the bum would always fall off 510 shells. I asked, "why didn't you just cut it off? It serves no useful purpose." He looked appalled for some reason. 🤔

More uppy dates from the last week and a half...

I had a trunk floor to donate to the cause.  First thing - remove spare tire well:

Not required for racing!  (plus it interferes with the meth lab)

large.781981044_swampthing07052022(1).JP

After much cutting and fitting

large.843023800_swampthing07082022(3).JP

large.633383130_swampthing07082022(2).JP

Starting to look race-car shape!

large.353640282_swampthing07082022(1).JP

Jeff was working on the 1/4 panel rust repair while I continued rear end prep (cue proctology jokes)

large.912713969_swampthing07132022(9).JP

large.1004941663_swampthing07132022(8).J

Trunk floor repair complete!

large.1120536037_swampthing07132022(7).J

Jeff and Paul finished fitting the tail pan while I got dinner

large.1809426630_swampthing07132022(6).J

All this and we've crossed almost nothing off the list!  We put a dot next to the items that MUST be done before ORP (in two weeks)

large.1178735223_swampthing07132022(5).J

"REPAIR CRASH DAMAGE" almost done...

large.1210349743_swampthing07132022(4).J

I worked on the mangled fender flare for a while and finally got it back to a shape resembling the right side.  Body is marked out for metal removal.

large.907296984_swampthing07132022(3).JP

Paul almost completed the "REPLACE BELTS" and the window net is next.

Pink returns!  And we get 2 1/2 years of racing this time!

Covid strikes again!  😥

No work on the car for three weeks and we had to cancel our trip to ORP.

So now we begin again - The Ridge is next on the calendar - 2nd weekend in September.  Gotta get this thing finished then!

large.2073879076_08032022swampthing(1).J

I worked on trimming the left rear quarter while Jeff did some more cleaning/grinding/paint prep in the trunk.

large.1789863977_08032022swampthing(2).J

Then we made an executive decision...  We are going to paint the car!

So while Jeff finished the inner fender well, I removed the stickers.

One last patch panel...

Next time we sand 'till our arms fall off!

Time to pick a paint scheme...

Made a CAD model of one of the clutch disks in case we need to have some made - if we can't locate any new.

Optical comparator was very helpful...

The tooth geometry was a little complicated though - not sure I have it exactly right.

large.1807505300_05142022swampthing.JPG.

I'll print one out to compare.

Anyone know the exact material of these (or similar) clutches?  I measured the hardness at RC45-46.  It looks like heat treated 4130/4140 would get us there spec-wise.

Have you figured out how to increase the clutch pressure yet? There are a few tricks. Also, are you measuring the pressure? If not, I can tell you how.

We were planning to use shims.

We weren't measuring pressure - just breakaway torque.

We want to slap in the extra SR 6 speed I have.  That will make the current 3.9 gears much much lower.  Then it will be in a range we can actually tune the gearing.

"race car quality" - very much so.  We had to replace the bottom of that quarter and there was barely enough metal that wasn't rusted through on rear to even weld the tail light panel to.  : )  We would LOVE to be using reproduction panels but if I haven't mentioned it previously, even budget racing is expen$ive!  We try to save money where we can because there are so many places where we cant.

Friday night was sanding night!

  What's it from?

From the color chip.  🤷‍♂️ 😊

We looked through hundreds of automotive manufacturer specific paint chips and they are ALL metallic.  It was difficult to even find just plain colors.  This chip was from a paint manufacturer generic chip set - kind of like what you see for house paints.

You should have seen us trying to find white.  There are 1,000 "whites" in those chips and none of them are white.  We also wanted "pink".  Forget about it!
