Jeff and Sam put in some time Monday to finish off the interior, brakes, and get closer on the wiring.

When we got together after work yesterday we needed to finish EVERYTHING!

Coolant pluming finished, new widescreen rear view mirror is mounted, suspension is all buttoned back up, new front sway bar fab completed and installed, correct MAF found (we had to pull it off of Hey - Jeff's 2dr 510 daily driver) and console re-mounted in its new - more ergonomic - orientation, and hood reinforcement added.

We dropped it to the ground about 9pm last night and each of us took it for a short spin up and down the road in front of Jeff's house.

It's AWESOME!  The engine is SO SMOOTH!!!  We are very excited and it was a great note to end on after all the hours we have poured into this project.

When we left for the night, we looked at the list, and everything was crossed off.  We've never seen that before.

The race is this weekend.  We tow the car down to Pacific Raceways (SIR) on Friday.  Wish us luck.

The update you are all waiting for is coming, but before we get into it, I wanted to make sure our past was behind us so I finished stripping down the L20b to get a better look at the damage and try to answer the question.  Did the piston break and lead to the rod cap giving way or visa-versa?

Remaining rod end bearings didn't look bad.

Same with the main bearings

The crank was another story.  Not only the damage webs and counterweights but look at the heat damage on the crankpin journal!

Ouch!

I still want a couple pieces. :)

Who's keeping the rods?

Link to our weekends worth of fly by's. Unfortunately there really isn't any other view for spectators.

Luckily, we were able to find ourselves being trailed by another team for a lap of their in car footage!
Starts at around 19:00: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wgax4wyZyR0

FYI the footage is from the group B winners of the Saturday event!

It was very apparent that our rear drums are not going to cut it. We were under the car adjusting them every few hours at the last race.

Solution in works,

Wilwood dynalites with Z32 rear disc's, just have to weld on the brackets and plumb them up.
This will help our brake balance and wear rate immensely.
We may need to up size our master at this point though.

Time for a memory check...

Sorry we never gave a race report.  I'll take full responsibility - and I'll try to start chipping away at it over the next couple of weeks.

Let's start with the weekend weather report we were looking at:

And the drive ahead of us (we would be making this drive back and forth a few times over the weekend)

Loaded up at Jeff's and ready to head down.

Arrived at the track Friday afternoon.

In line for "Tech"

They didn't appreciate our lack of oil breather catch can (we ran out of time) but otherwise there were no issues.

Time to go for a walk.

large.IMG_8060.jpg.a85b1d4f334fa83e54c9d

We had heard many stories about how SCARY this track was.  "Watch out there", "Lot's of people crash there", "Whatever you do, don't lift there - or you will die!" (paraphrase)  So we thought it would be a great idea to take a look around ourselves.

This is the main straight walking down towards turn - a slight right kink - a long way off in the distance...

300px-Pacific_Raceways_(Kent,_Washington

If you've  never seen the track before.  After the kink there is a long medium speed 180 degree left hander - turn 2 - and a steep hill leading down to turn 3a, a tight right 180 with a short downhill straight to turn 3b.  you loose a LOT of elevation from turn 2 to 3b.  After 3b there is a the track moves around up and down and side to side through a very fast turn 4 left hander and then a really tricky 5a left followed by a key 5b right and 6 left.  We will essentially be full throttle from 5b apex through 6, up a steep hill toward the turn 7 left hand kink - still full throttle to 8 where the track opens up 6-8 lanes wide for a medium speed left hand 180 kind of like turn 2. (they use this area to stage drag cars for the drag strip)  You come out of 8 and it's full throttle through the right hand kink - turn 9 - onto the long long straight.

Here we are after 3b.

Looking back on 3a.  The downhill approach to that corner is not kind of brakes let me assure you!

3a to 3b

b5 and 6 - looks easy when you're just standing there.

When we got back to the top, we ran in to Jeff's autocross buddy - Rocky - a very good thing.

Rocky was very cool and gave us a bunch of his time.  He took us around most of the track again.

Then he took us into the racing school office and went over most of the corners on a big track map on the wall.  Thanks Rocky.  You are a class act!
