Datsun 620 With Z24 Block and L16 Head Swap

Recommended Posts

The silver block is the L20B has U67

The black block looks like W53 or W58.

W58 is the '78-'80 L20B head with the round exhaust ports.

W53 is an import head for EFI engines in Japan. Has large valves like the W58 and the U67 but small intake ports.

What picture are you looking at wayno??

Is the black block with the orange fram filter the Z24??? because that is not an 210 L16 head. Looks like W53 (import JDM) or W58. The W53 has huge valves same as the W58 No wonder it goes so well.

I was looking at the wrong engine, I also just noticed that it is an L20b as the alt bracket is connected to the lower bolt.

I cannot tell what the new engine has for a timing chain cover, photo is at the wrong angle.

I wonder if the coolant passages were drilled in the block for the L head?

I suppose it would have helped if I had read the captions in that photo account.

Here's another video of the truck idling after I got the jetting a little more correct and was still open header (turn volume up) ;)

And here's a recent one where everything is back together, needs bigger exhaust but this is all in the 1K-4K range so I
didn't rag it out too much!

Wayno there is also the shortening of the timing chain. Never seen how this was done. Supposed to be a Mercedes part.

Sounds super good!!!

I do recall him telling me that the timing cover portion of the head gasket was "custom" made of standard Z24 gasket and then extended RTV of some sort. Probably why there was about 4 extra head gaskets included lol.

For a Z24 stroke of 96mm the redline is just over 6,250 RPM. You can safely set it at 6,000.
