Crashtd420
I know you said it before you dont like driving your 521 on the highway, so hopefully the spot I'm looking to meet will work for you too.... 1 Quote Link to comment

Mainer why don't you like driving yours on the highway? I don't because its so loud and to keep up with traffic i have to run it around 3800-4k RPMs. Quote Link to comment

I don’t mind the noise, but I feel like the old engine couldn’t take the high RPM’s for long. Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
I pass traffic in my 521. If it blows it blows :D Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It blows when you don't pass traffic. Quote Link to comment
d.p
I don’t put around in mine but I’m certainly not blowing anyone’s doors off either. Hell if I can go somewhere back roads vs the freeway I’m taking the back roads. I would do unspeakable things for a 5 speed. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I like tertiary roads when road tripping. Getting there is better than arriving. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
here is why I wished I put a stock type muffler on my 521 . I upsized it but have a Dynomax Superturbo muffler whith the turn vains on there 1.75 inch. In morning when cold it kinda loud but warmed up its OK but after 4k its loud o the freeway. a stock type aircleaner would help also as the Weber is noisy Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
That's just all part of the Datsun wind noise, box of rocks L motor, transmission whine symphony 3 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
It’s true about the transmission whine. Basically the same trans between my roadster and 521 and they sound exactly the same. 1 Quote Link to comment

So do I but sometimes I just want to get somewhere quicker. And is there really anything wrong with driving consistently at 4K rpms? I mean other than more stress on the drivetrain?? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Agreed!!! Sometimes I let the dogs out! If your engine is in good condition and tune as well as full of water and oil, transmission and differential also filled with oil... you'll never blow one up. Red line for an L20B is 7k..... L16/18 even higher! Pfft 4K is nothing. Think of your L20B as being Jessica Jones saying to Luke Cage.... " you don't have to be so gentle.... I won't break" 1 Quote Link to comment

I have my tachometer set to 5500 and rarely go above that. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
8,300 RPM. Rarely achieved on a stock engine or needed. This is for a perfect condition engine not something 40 years old. But 8,275 is the safe maximum operating RPM above which metal parts start to stretch or shear from the g forces. It would be wise to stay somewhat below this. It's a theoretical limit. It can be exceeded with special rods and bolts etc. No doubt about it the L16/18s like to rev to make any power. On an L20B I noticed that with the Hitachi 2bbl downdraft power really falls off after 4K and it's a long wait to 5K. I have motorcycle carbs on it now and that's all changed. It pulls from 3K on up. 5,500 is probably the power limit going up through the gears and you might find the torque is stronger if you up shift to a higher gear. If climbing a long hill where it would slow down in a higher gear you can hold steady at 5,500 all day. 1 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
My exhaust valves are sunk and the L16 is a dog above 4500 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
Peak power is made at 6K on an L16??? Is that correct? 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Doesnt plate under the hood say it.... Says max hp 92 (at the flywheel) / 5600 rpm.... 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Something like that. My 710 says 110 at w/e. (net) 1 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
Was bored during lunch today, so I made some door lock knobs. They kinda look like cigarettes, which was unintentional. Edited October 17, 2019 by mainer311 5 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
Curious what everyone is running for batteries? Mine was DOA this morning. Between the previous owner and myself, it made it almost 8 years. I want to "upgrade" to something smaller and lightweight possibly. Is anyone running a group size 26? Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
I'm running an AGM SuperStart from Orielly's. OG size I guess, it's definitely not "small". Quote Link to comment
demo243
Ive got an odyssey PC-680 in the 510 behind the passenger seat and it has no problem cranking and starting the KA. Will be running the same thing in the 620. Previous owner mounted one behind the the bench seat up against the back wall of the cab. Quote Link to comment
mainer311
Well, I ended up getting a size 34 Duracell. It’s the same size, but lower, and almost 700CCA, which I’ll never need. I do have some audio equipment, but nothing crazy. Should be good for the next 10 years. Quote Link to comment
d.p
My battery is huge. I would pay good money for a smaller one. Would any optima yellow top work? Quote Link to comment
