SC620
Hi guys, names JR. Recently purchased a 1979 620 in not too bad of shape for a bit under $1000. I love these trucks and this will be my 2nd one. I'm a Nissan guy at heart: drive now 02 Xterra Supercharged V6, wife drives Nissan Altima, been many Nissans in between time: sentra se-r, maxima, hardbody pickup, pathfinder. First 620 was in high school didn't really appreciate what I had, it blew a head gasket and if course after a while mom had it towed out the yard. Whoever ended up with that got a gem: blue original paint, single cab, factory long bed with l20b. Anyways on the new trucks: so 17 years later I find another one (now I can appreciate what I have, been looking locally basically for the last 10 years for one) details on this one: 1979 single cab, regular bed, body is in good condition, frame is in good condition, interior is decent and with a running l20b. Plans for the truck: 18" titan/armada 6 spokes on the way (deposit dropped, 2 more payments from a local friend) 3" drop Rebuild the l20b with a good o.b piston, performance cam, msd ignition, dual Weber carbs, manifold, header, etc. Clean up interior, dash cap, stereo, some civic so seat I have laying around, carpet. Are there any Datsun guys around here (Columbia, S.C.) just had a back surgery could use a hand ? Any ideas on my engine build, etc Thanks guys - how do I post pics up ? - 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Nice find! The '79 already has an excellent electronic ignition so skip those over rated MSG ones and save your money for tires or cam. I think there are several members from SC. 1 Quote Link to comment
SC620
Oh cool man. Definitely looking forward to working on it. I found tires today on letgo. Barely used set of Michelin pilot sport as3 225-45-18. They will be going on the Titan wheels. What can is recommended for a mild l20 ? Still waiting on some S.C. guys to chime in. Did not know these '79s had electronic ignition. New dizzy gonna be ordered too than. The kid I got this truck from had messed with it some: extended lugs, front is torsion dropped 3.5 ", some bondo has been started on a few minor dents. But all in all this thing is all there !! I am so stoked to build it up. I love these trucks, best looking mini truck in the game !! Period !! 1 Quote Link to comment
SC620
Why are the manifolds for the duals so expensive ? Not to mention the dual being $450 each going with weber 45dcoe(gonna down jet them some) I was looking at gaskets and I found a used cannon manifold and triple weber setup for an l28/ according to the gaskets if I cut the middle runner, the 2 outside sections are basically a 4 cylinder manifold ? Am I right or ? 1 Quote Link to comment
SC620
The used cannon manifold is $800 with triple weber 45dcoe and linkage and filters. Could hack the manifold runners out the middle 2 cylinders and have a manifold and and an extra weber side draft to sell and make a few bucks back 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
*Cam You should be able to edit your post by selecting EDIT at bottom of page. Did not know these '79s had electronic ignition. New dizzy gonna be ordered too than. If you have the distributor do not buy another. Unless you get one from Nissan. The ones for sale are Chinese knock-off and yours is far better quality. Don't fix what isn't broken. 1 Quote Link to comment
SC620
I found out that the cardone unit sold at local parts stores and on rock auto has Hitachi guts. My dizzy seems to be getting low spark. Could be the side mounted capacitor? Its wire looks like shit. May replace that first and see what happens. Anyone ever heard a weird chain slappy noise against the valve cover ? New t chain-water pump ? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
How are you determining 'low spark'? Has anything been replaced from the original parts? This is usually the case. You need good quality cap and wires. Was the coil changed? These almost never fail but some owners think that they need to replace them.... usually with inferior parts with poor quality that are painted bright red. People will buy anything that's shiny and red. If you think it's the capacitor, disconnect it. Does it run any better? If not it isn't it. The chain guides do wear out. Take the valve cover off and look. Figure out what it needs first or replacing things that don't need replacing gets time consuming/expensive and doesn't correct any problem. 1 Quote Link to comment

wilfvelez
Did you ever get your truck running? Quote Link to comment
SC620
Not really. Need some help. I'm not familiar with mechanics let alone one of these. Got my titan wheels and rubber. Trying to mount them and put on drop blocks. Got the backs on waiting on ARP longer wheel studs for the front Quote Link to comment
