Well power has to get to the ignition and the fuse box some how. Normally it is through the fusible link. When the power wire touched ground a lot of current would flow along this wire to ground. This is why it is fused.

There has to have been a connection from the battery positive to the ignition and fuse box. Maybe it was ghetto wired up, Maybe someone wires a 60 amp fuse in line, but it has to have been there or the truck would not run. Touching the alternator wire to the case grounded it out and probably blew it.

Follow the positive cable to the starter. This is the only place it goes. Someone must have connected into it somewhere. Usually there is a wire molded into the positive battery cable right at the post. This is the power for running the truck. It has the fusible link on it.

The 620 fuse box unplugs easily and is only on with two screws. Take it off and scrub clean in the sink and rinse. Now submerge overnight in a solution of lemon juice (the real stuff not that 'from concentrate' crap, Real Lemon works) and table salt. In the morning rinse thoroughly and dry. The citric acid breaks the copper and oxygen bond that causes the tarnish on the surface of the fuse clips. The salt acts like a catalyst to improve the removal of tarnish.

If your clips have been heated too much they may have lost their temper or ability to grip the fuses tightly. This can't be fixed.
