77 620 bulletside
The hot wire on my alternator fell and hit and groundes now I have no charging. My question is where does the got wore go in the harness? If I jump a hot wire to the alternator back everything works but my fuses get hot when I use anything electrical does that mean something in my alternator is dead or in my wiring? racerx
Could be...take it to O'Reilly or AutoZone and get it tested. Once this is checked and ok, then you know its wiring that got grounded. Quote Link to comment
77 620 bulletside
Without a hot wire on back of alternator my ignition or electrical my system is dead all my fuses are good so what messed up Quote Link to comment
Roadster-ka
Check your fusible link/links with a test light. Quote Link to comment
77 620 bulletside
I don't have any anywhere Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
re cheack the fuses or put new ones in. try another alt. maybe old one diode is shorted. Im fucking guessing here Quote Link to comment
Roadster-ka
Unless it's been removed, the manuel shows that the fusible link is wired to the positive battery cable. Quote Link to comment
77 620 bulletside
Could it be ignition relay no power when keys is on Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The fusible link (Green wire) is wired to the positive battery cable at the post. Before going any farther confirm that it is alright. If it is crispy or burnt this is the problem for now. Quote Link to comment
77 620 bulletside
There was no fuseable link that's why I'm asking what got fried when alt wire got dropped and grounded out and what does that ignition relay do And to all I have fuseable link in line Now Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Well power has to get to the ignition and the fuse box some how. Normally it is through the fusible link. When the power wire touched ground a lot of current would flow along this wire to ground. This is why it is fused. Quote Link to comment
77 620 bulletside
What does the ignition relay do on my firewall Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
if fusable link is fryed you have no power to fuse box Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It powers several things to take the load off the ignition switch. The truck is becoming more complicated with electrical components. Quote Link to comment
77 620 bulletside
No fuseable link anywhere and no power to fuse box when I hook a hot wire to alt everything works but my fuses get hot when I use anything the alt wire is dead going thru my harness Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
There has to have been a connection from the battery positive to the ignition and fuse box. Maybe it was ghetto wired up, Maybe someone wires a 60 amp fuse in line, but it has to have been there or the truck would not run. Touching the alternator wire to the case grounded it out and probably blew it. Follow the positive cable to the starter. This is the only place it goes. Someone must have connected into it somewhere. Usually there is a wire molded into the positive battery cable right at the post. This is the power for running the truck. It has the fusible link on it. Quote Link to comment

77 620 bulletside
Ok got all my charging back but some of my fuses are getting pretty damm hot What's causing this any clues anybody charging is at 13.41v Quote Link to comment
Roadster-ka
Fuses get hot from poor contacts with metal clips. Either clean or replace fuses and more importantly clean contact clips. Search vinager bath for fuse box for procedure. Quote Link to comment
77 620 bulletside
I wish to thank everyone for there help I think we got it now. Thanks Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The 620 fuse box unplugs easily and is only on with two screws. Take it off and scrub clean in the sink and rinse. Now submerge overnight in a solution of lemon juice (the real stuff not that 'from concentrate' crap, Real Lemon works) and table salt. In the morning rinse thoroughly and dry. The citric acid breaks the copper and oxygen bond that causes the tarnish on the surface of the fuse clips. The salt acts like a catalyst to improve the removal of tarnish. If your clips have been heated too much they may have lost their temper or ability to grip the fuses tightly. This can't be fixed. Quote Link to comment
