60L GEARBOX - CAN IT HANDLE 112FT/LB?

Recommended Posts

I purchased and had overhauled a 60L gearbox for my Sprite trackday car. Car puts out 138Hp and 112FT/LB of torque.

Was built by Bob Asgiersson a US specialist (now passed away) - broke it and then repaired by Aussie rally Datsun mechanic (no knowledgeable on the 60L).

Unfortunately, I've never gotten the thing shifting well. Awkward as hell on the road coming down from 3rd to 2nd. On the track I have a similar problem selecting 3rd.

Any advice from forum members?  Is this a common issue?  Is it just that I'm pushing too much torque through the box?

If so, is the 60A a better bet, or do i have to cobble together an adaption of a 63A.

While I'm on the topic, there is a big gap between 2nd and 3rd.  Do any of the other boxes offer better gear spacing?

The 60A is the regular H pattern.

The 60L is a dogleg shift with reverse above first

R..2..4

1..3..5

I don't know about what was available in Australia, but here the 60L was used to July '79 only, then switched to the 60A in August and until November. At this point both had the same gearing but 5th...

60L/A

3.513

2.170

1.378. The later 60A was 1.320*

1.000

0.845. 60A over drive was 0.821

*From December '79 on there were two gearing options on the 60A. third gear. Larger jump from 2nd to 3rd but closer from 3rd to 4th.

That's a lot of torque to push through a 60 series box. Almost 2X what it was used for. That's even a lot for a 63A dogleg. Can you run a 71B if you make an adapter for it?
