captain720
Thanks, got a good copy in PDF format. Now the radiator is junked so that is now top priority. But after that the steering seems fairly sloppy, is this just normal for non power steering models or is there something I can do to reduce this? Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
There will always be a certain amount of slop. Its a 4x4, and that is the nature of the engineering. That being said, what are you actually experiencing? 3inches of steering wheel movement before anything really happens at wheel? Bucking and shaking at speed? Quote Link to comment
captain720
It's a 2wd no power steering. My other one is a 4wd (sorry I have trouble with pics, still working on that). Yeah there is just a ton of play before anything happens. I can turn the wheel at leats 3 inches when going down the road before anything happens. Quote Link to comment
Draker
They might have an adjustment on the steering box. But more than likely it's just worn out. Quote Link to comment
wayno
First I would have someone move the steering wheel back and forth while you are under the truck and see what moves, do it in steps, first a few inches and work your way up to a quarter turn, check every tie rod to see if it is moving and make sure what it is connected to is moving exactly the same amount, check the idler arm, does the shaft look like it moves anything other than in an arc in its idler arm housing, does it look to come out of the housing at exactly the same angle as the housing it is in. If the person turning the steering wheel moves it 3/4 inches and the pitman arm doesn't move you likely need a new steering box/gear. 1 Quote Link to comment
captain720
Thanks guys, will take a look at that. Just put the new radiator in, but I couldn't get the fan shroud attached so I took off the fan shroud. (New radiator is much thicker than old one) it runs like a top though. 2 Quote Link to comment
captain720
Ok so I guess fan shrouds aren't just there to keep our fingers safe? I have been considering making one out of fiberglass, maybe make it easy to remove. Has anyone here tried this? 1 Quote Link to comment
wayno
What happened, it start running warmer at an idle? 1 Quote Link to comment

I had the same issue when I put a new radiator in; not having the radiator shroud in there as been better for me personally, but I agree that it helps with airflow across the radiator. Are you having overheating issues? 1 Quote Link to comment
captain720
Nope, I have literally driven it about 1/8 mile with new radiator and it is around 19°F out there. No overheating issues whatsoever. I was just thinking about when it will be 100°F this summer. I was just doing some research and the internet told me they were an absololute necessity. :) 1 Quote Link to comment

Good to know thanks, what's humidity? Never heard of that, is that where there is like water content in the air or something ;)? I don't have AC, very base model truck so I won't worry about. Yet......... 2 Quote Link to comment
wayno
I have a few trucks without radiator shrouds and have no issues, Normally the shroud is important in stop and go traffic when your not moving fast as the shroud helps the fan move more air thru the radiator, the farther away the fan is from the radiator the more you need a shroud. 3 Quote Link to comment

captain720
Went out for a nice drive today, only about 30 miles but she ran great and I was really surprised how much more power she is putting down when compared to my 4wd, handles great and I found some snow to muck about in. :) It is also quite a bit faster than my 2.8 V6 S10, which isn't saying much but............. The road doesn't get plowed as it is a private road so the drive I am in is partially plowed, the rest had 5 inches of powder that had been driven upon. B) 3 Quote Link to comment
MaxChlan
Now all you need is some snow tires and your truck will get through everything. I got new General Arctics last winter and I never had to engage the 4x4. It's amazing what a *relatively* light truck will go through that a heavier truck will struggle with. 1 Quote Link to comment

I have some nice hankook studs on this one that I got a good deal on (still brand new/full tread), and on my 4wd I have winter cat XTs (studed) for winter and some nice all terrains for winter. I have already had to chain up the 4wd once this year lol, the tires are exceptional on my winter drivers. We have some pretty interesting driving here and I am always going out in the mountains as I have lots of family there. :) 3 Quote Link to comment
MaxChlan
Nice! Jealous of the studded tires. MNDOT doesn't allow them on public roads, but my Arctics are studdable in case I want to drive up a mountain. Oh wait... I have no mountains. :crying: 1 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
You live in Yakima. No real need for a shroud as you don't have traffic you deal with daily. But...I would still find a way to make one fit if it was my car. 1 Quote Link to comment
captain720
I might try my hand at making a 60% fiberglass shroud. 1 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
My plan is to switch to e-fan(s) and make a shroud out of a baking sheet. 1 Quote Link to comment
captain720
Has anybody ever experienced an issue where the tach doesn't work most of the time. But sometimes it bounces to the right RPM range and then drops back down again? Doesn't seem to make a difference if engine is warm or cold. 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
Sounds like a wiring issue, signal wire. 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
I second drakers opinion. Likely a wiring issue. 1 Quote Link to comment
captain720
Adjusted valve lash today, picked up 70 psi of compression in cylinder one. But it is still low all the way across (120). Wet compression test does not change anything. Ideas? 1 Quote Link to comment
