five1oh
The build that started with the fenders.... So I was driving my slammed (because that's what you do if you own a 620) recently acquired 79 Datsun 620 longbed far from home in Sac by all the junkyards when my best friend called me...he was living in SoCal at the time going to school and went to some house out in the desert to pick up fiberglass for his ranger prerunner he was building. I happened to not have a drivers side fender on the truck because it had been crumpled and I was waiting for the $50 repop to come in. I was at a minitruck import specialty shop looking for a transmission and when he called me he told me he had an idea....he asked me to find out if they had a 79-83 Toyota 4x4 fender at the shop. I asked and there was one hanging on the wall right in front of me. I asked to borrow it and promptly walked out to my truck and held it up where the missing fender was. Surprisingly it matched pretty well just hanging a couple inches to far in front of the grill as well as 2-3 inches by the corner of the window but I said it would work!!! He bought the two fenders for me and the rest is history. Because longbed I was able to separate the sides from the bed floor and place my two feet on one bed rail with my hands on the other and just stretch...tack welded some support beans in and voila! We used the stock front lower arms because believe it or not I lifted it with the stock torsion bars!!! What can I say - budget!! We mounted up shocks and later on we were able to add coilovers. I jumped the truck twice over some railroad tracks at 60 mph and got about 3-4 feet off the ground with full droop!! With the stock motor smog legal it really was gutless and had to draft semis on the freeway to overtake them....but I loved that truck so much - later on in life it became a 73... 33x10.5!!!!! On a Datsun!
