1979 Datsun 280zx needed

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

To start off it’s great to be on this forum and it’s going to be good talking to all

you guys, also I had no idea where to post this so if it is in the wrong area let me

know and I will move it.

My Father wants to gift a 1979 Datsun 280zx to my grandpa. So I

have been looking online for a beat up 1979 Datsun 280zx for sale and

there are many to choose from but I don’t know what I am looking at to be honest.

What I need to know is a rough price range I should be going for, and then any tips

and tricks that will help along the refurbishment.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks guys.

The whole point of gifting is to avoid paying anything when transferring to a family member.

The VIN is stamped into the cowl behind/above the valve cover anyway, you can't just swap the engine tag. Plus this is illegal. Not saying this is the case but, for all we know, yours might even be stolen.

See this all the time in California. Trying to make a newer vehicle a '74 emissions exempt vehicle.

Sheesh guys!  Read between the lines on the post.

His father wants to buy a 1979 280ZX to give to his grandfather.  And he wants to know a reasonable price to pay for a fixer-upper 1979 280ZX and some idea of the refurbishment costs.

@Smonirh

Here on the East Coast they sell for $1000 to $8000 depending on condition.   Last week I looked at one for $800 that had a near perfect body but had not been cranked in 6 years.  The owner of another "nice" car is asking $8500.   There is no way of estimating the cost to refurbish without knowing your father's skills or the condition he wishes to attain.

Good luck finding the right car for your grandfather.

I still read 'gift' and 'to'. A term for transferring a vehicle to a close family relative to avoid paying excessive tax on it. I've done this many times. You don't buy a '79 zx to someone. If buying he would/should have said buying. Also why specifically a '79? unless he already owns that exact model? Wouldn't an '80 do just as well?
