1969 Mexican 1000 rally 510

Anyone have or can lead me to information on the car build of the 1969 Mexican 1000 rally 510? I've been doing a bit of searching and not finding much but a bunch of photos.

I like the photos. Only thing it lacks is the detail of the build. Engine size, tranny, running gear, lighting,etc. You know, all the good stuff!

I took pics of it at the first open house, it has an L-16 with SU carbs, most likely a SSS. Odds are the trans is a Roadster 5 Speed. Rear end looked stock, besides the sway bars and shocks. Otherwise it looks like stripped down race car.

The "Baja 1000" is often mistaken for the Mexican 1000 rally. According to the Speed Hunters article Peter Brock entered this car in the 69 Baja 1000 and came in 4th. That's virtually impossible, because the Baja 1000 did't exist until 73. No disrespect to the writer, but if he's making these kind of basic historical mistakes I have a hard time trusting anything he says.

 

Something of note. The BRE rally cars were Bluebird SSS 510s built by Nissan Works. For this particular car I seriously doubt you'll find any specific build specs. You can make some assumptions though based on what Nissan Works was doing in the early 70s. SSS running gear, dual side drafts, East African Safari rally suspension (actually in the Datsun parts catalog), etc.

Same race, they just changed the name in '73 

 

Calling it the Baja has become the generic term, just like calling the AFL-NFL World Championship Game in 1966 the first "Super Bowl" That name didn't come in until 1969

Maybe I take things a bit too serious, but I'm a long time fan of Baja. My next car project will be a classic 510 rally replica with modern running gear, beefed up chassis, and suspension. Nothing show about it, just straight up go.

I remember seeing pictures of the 521 that Nissan ran at Baja, and I think they won their class with it.
