I went through this a few years ago when I wanted to replace the foggy headlights in my 2003 Dodge ram 2500. OEM units were over $250 each, so I set my sights on replacement LED/HID combo lamps. Before I bought any, I read consumer reviews and even called around to a couple shops that install tons of these. None of the reviews or shops knew if they actually performed better than stock, but they all said they liked how they looked. I don't really give a shit how they look, I just want to see better. I did some of my own research and made a purchase. The new ones do light up the night. Just goes to show where we are in terms of consumer expectations. People don't really care about how things fit or perform. They just want cheap stuff that looks rad. Manufacturers are glad to take the money and run. 2 1 Quote Link to comment

d.p
All this talk about LEDs and it’s odd to me because the Datsun is my first car in a long time without LEDs or Xenons. Like I said I don’t drive my truck hardly at all at night so output isn’t a concern. More concerned with having cool looking headlights which very few people have except for Ray. At least that I am aware of. 3 Quote Link to comment

I assume it's for show and not that a higher Kelvin rating should be brighter or they should have X-ray projectors. Just above or below about 5,000 Kelvin (natural sunlight) is what our eyes evolved to see best in. Colored light is less visible light. 2 Quote Link to comment
d.p
I just realized I have the alternator from the l20b I got out of the 510. That 35amp as well??? 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
They might be 50 and still externally regulated..... 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
That was my original upgrade before I got rid of the regulator.... the one from the 200 sx is the same size and 60 amps as well as internally regulated. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Stock 510s were 50 IIRC. Early 520 J13s were 25 amp. Early 521s were 33? then and 35 amp after '71. 620s were 35 amp and 38amp around '77-'78. 50 amp car alternators are a tight fit in the trucks. 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
How can I tell what it is?? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
An original will have a foil sticker on it with LT35. Probably worn off. Later alternators (after '77) were internally regulated and will say LR35 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
What if no sticker? It is a Hitachi case but can’t find any other identifiers. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
When in the 510 did it have an external regulator? What was the L20B out of? Post a picture of it. 521/620 guys will probably recognize it if from a truck. 1 Quote Link to comment

The 510 with A/C is supposed to be about 60. I think early 510 alts were 35 like the 521, and they went higher in value in later years. 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
My l20b was out of a 610 I believe. U60 is stamped on the block and the head. And from google it says 50amps. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I checked and some were 22 amp @ 14v 2,500 RPMs. So yeah were low and may have gone up later. I have a '74 610 FSM (the '73 610 pretty much was run off the same production line as the 510 ended in '73) and they are rated 50 and optional 60 amps. Most (if not all) Datsun cars were 50 amp. The '73 was an L18 but the '74 was the earliest produced L20B I can find, all others, 710, 620 were '75. 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
74 610 internal or external regulator?? 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
no sticker and no identifier that I can see. 1 Quote Link to comment

That looks like an internally regulated one.... no idea on amps.... Can they test it at a parts store for amps or do they just give a voltage reading? 1 Quote Link to comment
mainer311
I don’t know Crash, that looks just like my 60A 510 alternator and mine is externally regulated. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Nissan switched to internally regulated alternators for all Datsuns for the '78 model year vehicles. That black plastic cover is (I think) used only on external regulated alternators. 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
I always assumed that the difference boiled down to Hitachi vs Mitsubishi. 1 Quote Link to comment

Yup I'm backwards.. looked at the wrong pic.. Just went out to my truck and had a look... it would have S and L on the back if it was internally regulated... F and N for the external.... 1 Quote Link to comment
d.p
So I could swap this in if it fits then? And that is because it’s externally regulated same as my current alt? Mainer no fitment issues with yours either right? Edited September 2, 2019 by d.p 1 Quote Link to comment

You'll just need a shorter belt to keep it closer to the block.... 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I'm using a gates XL7350.... I had the same altenator as mainer311, I went to the internally regulated one and it was physically the same same size.... You need to get the belt on first then bolt up the alternator.... 1 Quote Link to comment
