Gearbox options with an SR20DE?

Recommended Posts

Good morning  - hope everyone had a good weekend and got some driving / wrenching in.

I am curious about gearbox options on the SR20DE engine I picked up, it came with a 71C 5 speed. Basically I am looking to see if a bolt-on 5 speed that is not quite as long is readily available. I am a total Datsun/Nissan newbie so thanks for the patience, and as a reminder this is going into a (cough, cough) non-Datsun.

I believe that a Z trans will bolt on but am not sure. I have to fabricate a driveshaft anyway so no newbie there...

Thanks!

'84-  300zx non turbo might work but it's not any shorter I think. I'll check but after '86 or so the 71C was dropped for a different one.FS5R30A? (I think, and will check)

If you want shorter get one (71C) from a 2wd D-21 Hardbody. Any KA engine should do but again, the early VG30 may as well but was changed later for an FS5R30A? same as the 300zx non turbo. They are around 30 " long.

Swap your SR front case on it. Not sure what the gearing ratios are.

Thanks Mike - doing more research here I am wondering if I can more simply deal with the shifter position by making something like this for the top linkage while keeping everything else (shifter kit from Summit Racing B&M Pro Ripper Shifters 45070 for TKO gearboxes but you get the idea)

Why not just use the transfer that came with it . It's stronger newer and parts are more available .

Good morning, it is longer than ideal and shifter mount is too far back BUT I think I can address the shifter via a fabricated shifter set up like above. I am hoping to use it...

Yes you could, though you may have to deal with the differing bearing sizes at the front. What advantage would this give you? They are oriented identically. Starter position?

I know what he wants, i meant you. 71c sits the same as the 720, so what advantage so you seek?

Edit: my mind instantly placed the 71c behind a ka, not an sr. Sorry, I'm slow.

Only downsides would be no speedometer pinion outlet, and the gearing may not be optimal.

The 720 had a weaker 71B in it.

Thanks for the notes guys - appreciate the schooling.

For a 160 hp engine am I looking at gearbox strength issues with any of these? Don't think so but wanted to ask.

It comes with a 71C so get another 71C that is shorter.

Well the S13/14 is 4-5" longer than the one in the Hardbody.

I put a SR20DE bellhousing on a 71C from a KA24E powered truck for my wife's 1964 Datsun 1500 Fairlady project-- it worked out perfectly-- this is the only shot I have with it being mocked up in the trans tunnel.  It is 3" shorter (?) than the standard SR RWD trans.

What was the over all length?

Great discussion - thanks for all of the info and ideas. Hope this helps people in the future via search.

Looks like the shorter version is the way to go.

Now the question of where to track a pickup version down?

Ha - yes, I have let the smoke out on occasion!

Got the engine fitted today - only had to the battery tray area by two inches (non-structural and I was going to relocate the battery back to the trunk anyway).

It looks like the existing, longer gearbox, may still work. I need to reattach it to the engine and take one more set of measurements.

Thanks again for the help and encouragement  -  I mentioned this forum to one of the guys at the workshop where I am doing this and he said "Oh, yeah, those guys are great". I agree.
