wayno
Yea, your going to need the mount hardware, can that be bought with the distributor, do they sell it? Quote Link to comment
320 Newb
It's not in the picture or listed in the description but I guess I'll find out when it comes in the 24th. I had it ordered to the store so if it's not a fit or I can't find the mounting clamp I can just cancel the purchase. Any thoughts on this: http://www.hot-spark...Distributor.htm Quote Link to comment
wayno
I bet you could make your own if you had to. This is one of the plates. I don't know what the other plate looks like, but I bet you only had one bolt of the two holding the 320 distributor on, correct? Two plates made exactly the same would likely work, they need to be just thick enough to not have the distributor bottom out, who knows, maybe one plate would work, the two plate system works for timing marks, but a timing light will work just fine, you don't need the marks. 320 Newb
Any idea where the black wire with the round terminal mounts to? I know the green wires on the same cluster of wires goes to the horn. It comes off the cluster of wires going to the generator. I checked the wiring diagram but couldn't figure it out. TIA. Stoffregen Motorsports
Well, it could be a ground. Ground wires have been black in the past, but also white with black tracer. Are your other grounds black? Quote Link to comment
wayno
That black wire grounds out to one of the horn mount bolts, one of the green wires goes to the horn, the other is taped back into my harness, so I assume it would have gone to another horn if it had two of them. 320 Newb
Awesome thanks! You're correct on the green wires--according to the wire diagram one goes to a low horn and one goes to a high horn. Mine only has the low horn. Quote Link to comment
wayno
That photo you posted at 4:50pm appears to show what looks like a 320 generator, is it a positive ground 320 generator? Quote Link to comment
320 Newb
Yes, pos ground. I'm 99% sure it's the stock generator so when I hooked up a battery the first time I hooked it up neg ground and burned out my coil. Oops. I've always wondered what the previous owner did to make it run neg. ground. He probably made the switch when he swapped in the J15. Quote Link to comment
320 Newb
The Cardone Reman Distributor 31-600 for the J15 came in and it didn't come with a the clamp Wayno posted below. So I'm just going to run my stock 320 distributor until I can find one. If anyone has a lead on where I can find one please let me know! Quote Link to comment
wayno
You have to be able to find something, even the plate on a Datsun 521 with an L16 with a dual point dist. will likely work, you can see in the photo below the L16 plate on the J series distributor, the holes are a little rotated, but until one tries to time it you don't know if it will work or not. Some one down there must have an old L16 dual point dist. that they have no use for, people throw L16 engines away because L20b is better choice. Quote Link to comment
wayno
I just seen this on another forum, Tana has NOS E1 rotors, ask her if she has points also, here is her email address. vindats@yahoo.com Quote Link to comment

320 Newb
Did up my air cleaner--lots of wire brushing and sanding to get the layers of gunk off for painting. A while back I bought a 1960s Datsun dealership paint chart so I was able to match the factory air cleaner blue at my local paint place and have them fill a couple rattle cans. It was missing the rubber boot what the carb hooks in so I cut a new piece of rubber to fit. 2 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Did you cut the snorkel off or was it already cut? Where did you get that wing nut? Quote Link to comment
wayno
My 1963 snorkel has been cut also, a lot of them are cut. Quote Link to comment
320 Newb
The snorkel was cut when I bought the truck. The wing nut came from ACE Hardware--in the nuts/bolts section they had a plastic tray labeled "Air cleaner hold down nuts." Shockingly one of them fit! 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Nice. It looks original. Quote Link to comment
320 Newb
New points set at .020, new condenser, and new soldiered connections on a couple terminals. New paint job... Is there anything I can do to tune up the vacuum advance? Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Looks great. If the vacuum advance is working, that's all you need. Some vacuum advance units have adjustments on them, but mostly just American V8 stuff. 1 Quote Link to comment
320 Newb
So I dropped the battery back in for the first time since pulling the motor and cleaning/painting the engine compartment and now the headlights/parking lights/break lights don't work. They all worked before I started mucking with the engine bay... Any advice on where to start my trouble shooting? Quote Link to comment
difrangia
The 20 Amp fuse closest to the windshield is the fuse for the lights. My head, tail, park, dash, & brake lights went out last week and I discovered that the rearmost fuse wasn't making good contact. Cleaned the fuse contacts and that fixed it up. It's a start. 1 Quote Link to comment
320 Newb
^^^Bingo! Fuse contact issue. Thanks difrangia. The other electrical problem I can't figure out is my turn signal switch. I purchased a NOS switch, hooked it up matching wire colors but can't get it to work. Any suggestions on where to start trouble shooting that issue? Quote Link to comment
difrangia
Have you got a good wiring diagram and a volt/ohm meter? Start tracking down the juice supply and look for ground-out. Steve 1 Quote Link to comment
difrangia
BTW, Very nice work on the air cleaner and dizy. 1 Quote Link to comment
