ArchetypeDatsun
So last Monday I sold my 84 maxima and the same night went and bought my first 1977 Datsun 200sx S10 as some of you probably seen before. It is an autotragic but I plan to get a dogleg 5 speed with the clutch and break pedal, it's all original bone stock L20B that runs great and pretty much everything works including the heater. I picked it up in Hugo, Oregon about 3 miles deep into the boonies so the engine bay was pretty dirty but car was in a car port so well covered up. It started right up too and drove good wish I could get a 4 spd auto with overdrive from a 83-84 maxima for now but I heard those are too big to fit. I plan to lower it first and replace all the steering components and bushings to make it more solid car. I'm on the wall about cutting it up to put the ZG fender flares I have that I got from a friend for $30 bucks because it's such a clean car. It does have some rust on the kick panels, it was repainted but not super great just looks like they did a quick paint job. Here's the night I got it sorry for the crappy pics my phone sucks at night for pics. The morning after at work lol and I work at a Toyota dealer but we so have some Datsun fanatics that used to own one of these and a couple 510's. Some more pics threw out the week. I'm 5"11 and a half and big so this car is pretty small for me but truly is fun to drive i turn just under 4K rpm at 70mph on the hwy with the good ol' 3 spd auto. I wanna stick to 13" wheels maybe 14" but mostly likely go with 13x7 or 13x7.5 if I can find any. I do have some spare 15x6 280zx turbo snowflake wheels that need smaller tires and redone as someone painted them a ugly plum burgundy color at one point and then silver over it and throw them on until I get the wheels I want. 5 Quote Link to comment
S30Jay
I'd go w/out flairs.......but its not my car. Looks like a solid start. Glad someone is building one of these. 1 Quote Link to comment
ArchetypeDatsun
I really was trying to find a rustier one but they aren't many for sale or are across the country which with my funds and work makes a little tough. If I end up going with flares I want them done right and will color match them. I think they just help make the car look that much nicer kinda like a tiny Kenmeri. 1 Quote Link to comment

thisismatt
Already looks like you could double the width of the rear tires without flares :P 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Negative!!!!! Check the S10s automatic length. It should be 31.5...... same as the 71B 5 speed so no driveshaft shortening!!!! The 71B from a '77-'78 280z, '79-'83 non turbo 280zx, '77-'79 620, '80 720 (2wd) or any 810/Maxima had them. Much stronger transmission and more were made so more common, plus a choice of ratios and over drives. The L4N71B is about an inch longer than your automatic, might fit. 1 Quote Link to comment

I do want a 71B 5 speed as there easier to acquire I know a member selling a dogleg 5 speed so we'll see what happens. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Doglegs are much more scarce and very well used by now. The 71B from a truck is the same used to handle an L28 engine or at least 50% more power than an L20B. I would assume the wear on them is substantially less. Driveshaft should fit exactly. The problem with the dogleg is it's shorter and it's driveshaft is a two part, your auto is a one piece. A lengthened one piece might work otherwise it's not just a case of getting one. Where would you mount the carrier bearing? Like the silver color. Though oddly styled, it's a sweet car. 1 Quote Link to comment
Ratdat.com
Damn, that's super nice. I'd struggle to take a sawzall to that even if they do look better with flares! You're better off starting with a solid one though. Another model we never got in Europe :crying: 1 Quote Link to comment
ArchetypeDatsun
A few more pics can't wait to lower it and start modifying the engine a little. 3 Quote Link to comment

There is a local 71B off a 79 620 for $75 bucks but second gear doesn't work, might be worth getting to rebuilt. 1 Quote Link to comment

Son_of_a_Datsun_Guy
Legitimately excited to see how you play with this one. With other Datsun's getting so scarce (and frankly overdone) toying with something like this has so much more potential for originality. 1 Quote Link to comment

S30Jay
I don't think I've ever seen one in person. I think they have a cool look, also a fan of built up L20B's. What rear did they have Mike? 1 Quote Link to comment

ArchetypeDatsun
Nothing really new with the S10 lately just that the alternator went to shit on me because it was a reman. Ended up stealing the alternator off my 620 KC and charged the battery at work for half the day and runs great again. I do need to attend to the timing it seems a little advanced idles a little high, if I warm it up it will hesitate when I press the throttle so I have to ease it so it won't turn off. Sometimes when I go to turn it off the car will keep going for another second then it turns off. 1 Quote Link to comment
