Hix1985 Posted January 27, 2016 Report Share Posted January 27, 2016 Hey I could use some help putting numbers on two z22 engines, they are both out of a 1980 and 1981 Datsun 720 king cabs with five speeds. one is still in the truck and it runs with, the other one has been sitting in the bed when he got tit so he does not no anything about that one. He is going to send me photo's tomorrow of that one. any thoughts? I was thinking the one that runs with the 5 speed $400? and the one not running $200 with 5 speed? Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck Posted January 27, 2016 Report Share Posted January 27, 2016 Because 5speeds are included ( and if they are Z22s ) those prices seem close even out here on the west coast.. I personally would pick the one running in truck that way you know if it smokes or overheats and such.. The one laying in bed should be considered scrap .... $450. package deal for everything. Have him run the thing for awhile in case it only does weird things when warmed up. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike Posted January 27, 2016 Report Share Posted January 27, 2016 The owner may be confused. The '80 720 only came with the L20B engine. The '81 and '82 had the Z22 engine. Better find out for sure what he has because if the running engine is an L20B and you expect a Z22 you won't be happy. Transmission will be different too. Have you seen them or pictures? Best to go see the engine running. Make sure it runs and idles without overheating and restart it a few times. Cannot argue with Nanners assessment of the prices either. Quote Link to comment

I live in Ohio so I can't just go and see them I got family driving through SC this weekend and they where going to stop and get one if I wanted. I really just want the block and crank to build LZ2.3, so I don't care if they are running, its just good to know that the block is good. I guess I will wait until I see the photos thanks again! Doesn't matter how rusty the cylinders are as you will be boring 1mm off all the way round anyway. You do need a good crank and the rods. So be sure it hasn't spun a bearing. Quote Link to comment

Most of us would be super giddy to get a complete Z22 and a complete L20B in one shot. Preferably having the Z22 being the runner out of the 2 with the L20B having a good, straight cylinder head. scooter Posted January 31, 2016 Report Share Posted January 31, 2016 The z22 block I used had Soo much bore rust that I had to smash the pistons to pieces to get them out, it cleaned up at 88mm but I went to 89 because 2.3 goodness. These blocks seem very thick other than the steam holes between the cylinders. If these wernt there you could probibly go 91 or 92 mm Quote Link to comment
